  1. Hey...I sucessfully burn a VCD on my comp, and when I go to play it in my DVD player, it loads, and when the movie starts, it makes loud humming noises for a few seconds and then I have no sound. Also, the picture is very slow and choppy. It looks like the people are moving in slow motion. Any ideas on how to solve this prob? Thanks
    PLEASE REPLY!!!
    Steve

Assuming that the VCD is 100% compliant then I would guess its the media. What media are you using? If its a cheap brand then try using decent CDRs. Does it play OK on your computer? If so then change your media to something like Verbatim Data Life Plus, or a more expensive brand names like Sony, Kodac, Memorex, Philips, TDK etc.

  3. Yea, I use Sony CD-Rs and I am thinking maybe the problem occurs when I use TMPGenc. I got an email reply saying that I need to set it to VCD template by clicking "LOAD" on TMPGenc and then starting my transfer from AVI to mpg/VCD (are mpeg and VCD the same thing?). In TMPGenc, should I encode the audio and video separately or click on "System (Audio+Video)? Then, in Nero, after I drag and click the new mpg file, I click "Burn" and a box comes up saying "Stream invalid 2layers" or something like that. I was told to just skip that error and continue burning. Please, someone, HELP ME!!!

I think that you had better believe that error message and not ignore it!
The mpeg being created by TMPEG is not valid. Go to the guides on this site and make sure that you are follwing each step properly. You can encode the audio and video together if you like. Burn to CDRW to save CDRs if it goes wrong.
If you still have no success then reply back stating each step you make clearly and the software used.

  5. I have a DV-343 as well. Everything I have thrown at it, it plays, VCD, SVCD, CDRW, CDR, WAV. I also use TMPGEnc. I also use Nero to burn. Although some of my SVCD's have not been compliant (Nero gives me an error complaining that it is not compliant), they still work on my DV-343. If you are following the instructions on this site to the letter, you should have no problems playing them on your DV-343. Otherwise I would say your DVD player is faulty or your CDR's are poor quality. Personally I only use Maxell. I have burned quite a few CD's and have never had any problems with them.

The first time I used TMPGEnc I got tripped up on this too. The problem was that even though I was encoding everything into MPG form, it wasn't using the VCD compliant settings. Nero checks your MPGs for compliance before it will let you burn them.

How to fix it: In TMPGEnc, under the section at the bottom right where you can select encode video, encode audio, encode both... click on the Load button. Browse through the TMPGEnc folder until you find a file called something like "MPEG-1 (Video CD Compliant)". Use that one, then encode your AVIs with the System (Audio+video) option. Nero shouldn't complain after that.

Sorry I can't be more explicit - I'm at work
