  1. Here's the deal. I got 6 IDE hard drives on the way from ebay. I am considering putting a 20.4GB ATA-100 drive in my capture rig for O/S and file storage. Then, use my 80GB drive exclusively for capture. The issue is, I have a Plextor PX-708A on the way (I know... some "problem"). I am interested in YOUR capture experiences. I have read that by having two devices on the same IDE channel will cause the faster drive to slow down to the slower drives rate. There's an argument against the capture drive with the burner. I also don't want too much traffic on the IDE bus when burning. There's an argument against the O/S drive with the burner. I also don't know about both hard drives on the same channel due to traffic reasons when capturing. What is your experience with this?

  2. I doubt you'll be capturing while burning, and that would be your only problem.

When you use a regular PC for capture as opposed to a server with scsi raid array, you need to let your system capture and thats all. If you try surfing the net, listening to music, or try writing to your floppy while capturing, youll drop frames. ATA 66 works fine for capture for me (DV over firewire.)

Another option might be to get another IDE controller, they are very cheap.

Are you capturing DV through firewire, or through a capture card?

My TX2 Ultra ATA card does not allow diff speed IDE devices to affect one another. I capture to whatever drive is most open between the two cap drives and it works fine.

  4. Buy a used 3ware 6800 and run as JBOD. Its considered the top of the line card for IDE raid solutions. Susutained 80meg writes to boot, burst over 100megs.
