What kind of switch? If you mean a router you can use one internet ISP (Road Runner, AOL) IP address for multiple computers. Without really decreasing your bandwidth. Network switches allow to you divide your network into independent circuits, improving concurent transfers significantly. Full Duplex capability helps performance, too. If you get a hub then you'll have to "Buy" an I.P. Address for each computer from Your ISP. Routers do it all internally so you can "SHARE" one I.P. Addrees. BTW... You only need one if you have more than one computer

A hub sends the data to all ports. It does not identify each machine.
A switch sends data to only port/machine that needs it. It identifies each PC by MAC address from the NIC cards.
A router identifies by IP and MAC. Holds ip/mac tables etc.
