    All you could ever want to know in the guides to the left.

    Read a little, then read some more, then reread some of the stuff that didn't make sense the first time. It will all become clear.

    You will also find that some of the stuff you read contradicts some of the answers your questions elicit.

    A properly done SVCD will look like a DVD on smaller TVs and will look almost like a DVD on larger TVs

    Yes, at its best (maybe just on the not best telly), a SVCD is very near DVD quality (but lacking 5.1 audio). But what quality you can get very much depends on source quality, where DVD is the best. AVI to SVCD can get you anything between OK to awful.
    And hey - reduce that sig image by a factor of 10, please. If I want to watch Ms Aguilera I go elsewhere...
