Hello everybody!
I have Tyan Tiger MPX (S2466N-4M) motherboard (http://www.tyan.com.tw/products/html/tigermpx.html) with integrated AMD-768 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. I have HDD on Primary as Master and DVD-ROM on Secondary. I installed NEC ND-1300A on Secondary as Master and DVD-ROM as Slave. Actualy I tried all combinations, NEC alone as Primary and as Slave, NEC as Secondary and DVD-ROM as Slave and the problem is still the same.
My problem is: when I try to write CD-R or CD-RW with Nero Burning ROM 6.0.0.23 it stops responding when it supposed to start writting Lead-In to the disk. DVD+RW writes fine at 2x and I can format DVD+RW and even CD-RW without any problems. All CD and DVD reads fine. But when I try to write CD-R or CD-RW (4x or 10x - no differences) Nero stops responding and I can't even close it. NEC also not responding until reboot, that I can't do normaly because the system also stops responding after some time when I try to shutdown and reboot the computer.
I figured out that when I change PIO/UDMA setting in the driver to force NEC to work in PIO mode - everything is working fine! I also tried several NEC ND-1300A, even made at different date of the year - the problem is still the same. Only PIO mode helps. But in PIO mode I can't write DVD at 4x, because system is loaded at 100% even at 2x. And reading is also load processor up to 100%!
I have another computer at work with Intel 815 motherboard and NEC ND-1300A and everything works fine there using UDMA2.
I know there should be some solution, but I searched all the net and was unable to find it...
So I'm writting here with a BIG HOPE to get some usefull help from experts!
The biggest THANK YOU for your help!!!

I forgot to add the following:
1) I have the latest available 1.43s version of AMD-768 drivers;
2) I tried to remove them and using the regular Windows XP IDE drivers;
3) I tried different versions of firmware for the drive including the latest one (1.08);
No difference.
And because the drive works fine at work and don't work at my computer, it should be something with my computer, more then that, with my IDE controller and NEC incompatibility I think... Any ideas? -

Try getting a PCI IDE controller card and run it on there. I think I remember someone else having the same trouble with an AMD chipset several months ago and never got it going. You can usually get the cards for under $20.00, just make sure they support ATAPI drives and not just hard disks.

I tried Nero 6.0.0.23 and Nero 5.5.x.x, don't remember exact version. I also tried Roxio WinOnCD DVD edition, all products works the same.
I have another 3 in 1 card in the computer with FireWire, USB 2.0 and ATA-100 RAID controller based on CMD-0649 chipset. I tried to plug NEC ND-1300A into secondary channel of CMD-0649. In such configuration, Windows freezes at the boot time and never got to the logon screen.
I'll take another IDE controller in the computer company to try with NEC, but I think there should be a solution with the current AMD-768 controller. Maybe someone has some more ideas? -
I was thinking about why DVD+RW writes fine and CD-R(W) don't? And I'm sure that it should be a problem with firmware!!!
Think! For motherboard, IDE or software it's actualy no difference what is to be written - CD or DVD. The only device that has a difference is a DVD Writer. So the problem definitely in the NEC ND-1300A itself!
Somehow the device make some differences in his replies to the system depending on what media it tries to write. And I think in case of CD-R(W) it sends something that the controller don't like to receive and this case the system stop working correctly.
So my own suggestation is to ask NEC to resolve this problem and release updated firmware that will have this problem solved.
Anybody don't agree with me??? -
RAID is big no-no in conjunction with DVD-burner. Dont put the burner on the RAID chain
