Does anybody have a foolproof way to convert avi files and burn them on dvd without suffering from problems with the audio? I have seen several options here, tried a few but the sound is always out of synch. It starts out fine, but the longer the movie goes, the more out of synch the sound gets.

One thing, not to intruduce additional problems, is never to perform any frame rate conversion. Another is not to bother with downloaded AVI's.

You may want to try using VirtualDub to capture and if frame drop gets real bad you can lock the audio to the video with a checkbox. I was capturing AVI's with my GeForce4 and converting to MPEG2 with TmpGenc and finding my conversions out of sync. I then started using VirtualDub with the exact same setup and everything was fixed.

I have had the same problem, and have resolved it by doing the following:
First, make sure your .avi file is properly synchronized. The problem may be in your capture. If the problem is not in your capture (mine wasn't) then try using Virtualdub to detect and elimiate bad frames.
I had a problem where the audio sync started out fine, but would drift after a period of time, so that it was noticable after 45 min. Eliminating bad frames in the .avi file prior to converting to MPEG solved my problem completely.
Good luck, and by the way, if the problem is in the capture, I can share how I solved that problem too. Let me know. -
Guys, don't forget that DV AVI allows for 1/3 frame audio drift (unless you use locked audio device). Add to that sluggish app and the result is: sync gone.

use divfix to check if you have bad frames
then use virtual dub 1.45 with AC3....to run a bad frame check....then delete the bad frames.
Then use mainconcept......no more problems at all after that. -
