Ok... Here is the general list of what I have done...
transfered dv video as .avi (80min = 17gb) using vegas 4.0
Rendered NTSC video only mpeg2 stream with vegas and rendered the audio separately as 44.1kHz PCM WAV audio.
I authored the dvd with Adobe Encore 1.0 - and I let it re-encode the video at a lower bitrate to fit on one dvd. I tried leaving the audio alone(44.1 pcm wav), bringing it in at 48kHz, and letting adobe convert it to ac3 - this didn't seem to effect anything. There is one menu, which is basically just a title screen.
I used adobe encore to prepare the dvd files/folders
Then I used nero 6 to burn the disc as "dvd-video" and added all the files encore put in the VIDEO-TS (or whatever it's called) directory...
I also tried burning the disc right from encore. with the same results.
On my computer dvd player the burned disc plays perfectly. Off the HD it plays perfectly... However in my home dvd player phillips 724at it plays fine until it hit about the 1hr point - then it freezes up everytime.
My burner is a plextor 708a (with the newest firmware - just upgraded)
I have been burning to 2.4x imation (I think) dvd+rw
This disc however worked fine in my parents apex (don't rememebr the model#) - However in another friends home dvd player it would play fine for about 3-4min then it started jumping forward and messing up...
I don't know where the problem could be...
This is very frustrating... It could be the encode of the mpeg2 file, the authoring, the burner, the discs, or the dvd players...
Any ideas? What should I try next??
I have burned a downloaded radiohead dvd as an iso (data disc) and it's over an hour and works fine on my Phillips 724at.
Were do you think the problem lies?
The audio was recorded at 44.1kHz PCM wav... Is this ok and compatible for most dvd players? Or should I convert it to 48khz or ac3?
Also am I rendering the mpeg stream correctly with vegas? As video only NTSC 720x480 mpeg2? There is also an option to render as m2v.

APEX's will play anything MPEG, litterally! (no avi's). Sounds like a bitrate issue or filed order.
If it plays on your PC and an Apex, that means you did it mostly right. This applies to encoding or media.
It can also be the RW disk, not every player likes them (lowest % of compatability is a DVD+RW disk). To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Yep, the discs seem to be at least part of the problem... The other half seems to be nero.
I changed the audio to 48khz (I had tried 44.1 and ac3) and tried to burn the dvd on a dvd+r (2.4x taiwan fuji's) using nero... the burn failed... I tried to burn the same dvd using TMPGenc DVD and it worked just fine.
Maybe TMPGenc can also burn a dvd+rw that my dvd player will like.
And the dvd+rw's were imations.
