I am using DVD Decrypter to rip the VOB from the DVD to my hard drive.
In DVD Decrypter I am using all default settings. No problems so far.

I use Virtualdub-MPEG2 and this guide:
https://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm

In this guide, it specifically states to use Video->Fast recompress and explains why to not use full processing, so I use Fast recompress.

I select Audio->Full processing.

I select Video->Compression.
For Video Compression, I have been selecting Huffyuv. I have selected other codecs but have received the same failure.

I select Audio->Compression
For Audio Compression, I have been selecting MPEG Layer 3. I have selected other codecs but have received the same failure.

I select File->Save AVI and the process runs to completion.

I have had issues with Premiere v6 crashing with the AVI's generated by VirtualDub-MPEG so based on suggestion that I received, I tried several video codecs. The results were the same in each instance. I got to the point where I thought that Premiere was corrupted. I finally tried Virtualdub with no codecs and it worked.

The following is my sequences of tests using the Fast Recompress option:

Video codec = Huffyuv
Audio codec = Lame
Result = Premiere crash

Video codec = none
Audio codec = MPEG3 Layer-3
Result = Premiere crash

Video codec = none
Audio codec = none
Result = sync issue

Video codec = Cinepak
Audio codec = none
Result = sync issue

Video codec = Huffyuv
Audio codec = AC-3
Result = sync issue

Video codec =Huffyuv
Audio code = Direct Stream
Result = sync issue

From this it appears that if I use the MPEG Layer-3 or Lame audio codec, Premiere will crash. I am having a sync issue otherwise but this can be addressed in Virtualdub by adding a offset in the audio conversion.

Q1) Can anyone give me input on this issue?

Q2) Is there a better way to address the audio sync issue other than the offset setting in Virtualdub?

Q3) Also, why would I not use Direct Stream in the Audio section?

Thanks
