  1. I have a TDK 48x24x48 Cyclone writer which has some kind of problem just days ago..... Knowing how there are many pro's and ace's lurking around in here, I hope I found the right place for some help.

The prob is that my writer doesn't seem to read files for burning... For example, I place a CD-RW and start off burning; whenever it get's to 2% (on my Nero Indication bar) it stops.... It gives me from idle to track and it just freezes.... the timer still goes on. However, my writer is able to read CD files etc..... So what's the problem here? Don't tell me that my writer has offically died on me and decided to become a full time CD-Rom! I only got the darn thing for a year.......

Last but not least, which HD Co will you guys recommend? Western Digital? Or Seagate? Also I have plans too change some hardware on my PC..... I'm no pro, so I'm hoping to find a site that has all the info. If anybody has any sort of site for dummies or related, kindly post it. Thx in advance

What OS and version of Nero?

Is this drive alone in the IDE bus? Is it master or Slave?

Have you used different CD-RW media?

I'm using a Win XP Pro, and my Nero is a version 5 (OEM). The writer was a master before the prob occured, so I tried to switch to slave and it still doesn't read. I have a cd-rom 48x along the ide bus as well. Basically my cd-r/rw is like a normal cd-rom now...... And what's with the different type of cd-rw media? I hope my writer is not dead...... Looking forward to hear some suggestions, thx.

  5. What are you trying to burn?

Most burners only work as master when on the same IDE cable as the ROM drive (from my experience) Make sure the jumper is correct on the burner. Try it on the the other IDE with the hard as master and CD-RW as slave. Did it ever work or has it been this way since you bought it? Try a different CD-RW or CD-R. Try different software burning programs. Also try burning at slower speeds try half the speed you were doing before.
And what's with the different type of cd-rw media?
    What do you mean?
    CD-RW Rewritable (infinite times)
CD-R Burn once that's it (if you finalize it)
Brands ~~~ There's lots. Memorex and TDK's work fine for me

For Hardware I always buy from www.newegg.com and www.compgeeks.com or you can go to www.pricewatch.com and search all the sites. Personally out of the 2 choices for HD's I would Western Digital over Seagate. Just preference, I've had bad experiences with Seagate a couple years ago about them honoring warranties. But I've heard there pretty good now. But I only buy Maxtor now. :P Does that help at all?

Didn't I stated that my writer was as master before it died on me? I changed it to slave and I still don't have any response. The jumper is definately correct; how do you think I my mother board was to able to comprehend which drive goes to which? I've got my TDK writer for a year a bit more and the prob only occured a few days ago since the day I posted. I tried all the suggestions you mentioned but non of them freakin' work. So my assumtion is that my writer has become 100% cd-rom... if it's even possible. Does that happen? Any more suggestions? I don't like the idea of my writer dying on me like that

Anyways, thx for the tip on HD..... I always had WD on mind, thx again.

Wtf??? Where in the hell did this come from?? To my understanding, I have not used any offensive words or remarks, so how in the hell does that consider me a d!¢k??? You mean your consider a d!¢k in this forum for asking questions??? Geez....................... I thank you 808smokey for your suggestions on the HD aspect didn't I? And I still get accused of being a d!¢k.... Besides, I'm not getting much response anyways whether I'm a nice guy or a so-called d!¢k as you address me as

Please be patience, remember that when people does not answer is because they may not have the answer to you question.

CD writers dye without explanations. Some times this is cause because of heat, smoke or jut poor quality. It could also mean that it lost its calibration.

The only recommendations I have are the followings:

    * Try cleaning the heads with a CD-cleaner. It my work
    * Try flashing with the latest firmware
    * Go to the Windows control panel and uninstall the Nero, then uninstall the CD itself.
    * After uninstalling reboot and re-install Nero again.

If after doing all of this you still have the same problem, I think that you will have to buy a new CD writer.

The same problem happened to me a log time ago. I had a Philips 3100 (I think). After one year this burner stopped working and I was not able to make it work. It ended its days as a CD-ROM.
