  1. Hi there
Or should it take this long encoding with TEMPGenc. 12 hours to encode 2 pass VBR, max is 9350, PC specs, 1GB ram, 2.4GB athlon CPU, transfer from 80GB defragged to 60 GB defragged drive. 90 mins video length to MPEG2 from ES video only. All specs are same, double checked.

I'm currently capturing in Videostudio7 & then editing in same.
I then frameserve to TMPGenc via videotools plugin. I have read some other posts on this site concerning the same issue & the fact that the plugin slows the encoding time down. I have started to look into Avisynth but after looking on thier site I am unclear as to wether or not avisynth will frameserve from Videostudio7 to TMPGenc.
    Anyone know?

are you doing any high-quality filtering in TMPG?

I'm running an Athlon XP 1700 (1.4ghz) and it takes about 6.5-7.5 hours for a 90 minute vid, 2-pass VBR with an average of 7,000-8,000.

but that's not frameserving, that's just going direct in TMPG from an edited avi file.

seems a bit long to me, with the setup you have...

  3. when you say filtering, sorry I don't think so, what do you mean by filtering. Under the tab "motoin search precision" I use "highest quality".

that's what I meant - I don't mess with those settings, so I couldn't remember the exact syntax.

from what I've read from other users here, it seems like for all practical purposes the only thing that setting adds to your output is time, and lots of it.

most people can't see a difference between that setting and the next highest setting, except for the time it takes them to encode.

like I said, I never move that from whatever default is, since my encodes at the default setting look as good as the source footage (most of my captures are from VHS).

I would take a 2 or 3 minute clip and try it both ways - see if you see a significant improvement with the higher setting, if not, save yourself some time.

I am with housepig, I leave most of my settings "default" and it takes me about 4 hours to do a 90 min. video.

  7. thanks for the replies. Promlem solved.
Indeed I decided to go CBR & further reduced the encoding time, no loss in quality, at least to my eyes anyway. Only drawback is that I can only have approx 110mins on a dvd. Still no big deal.
    Thanks again.
