I don't know which program "these subtitle sofware" refers to, but to give you an answer of some sort:
The Vobsub filter for VirtualDub takes the subtitles from a DVD rip and puts them into your VirtualDub output. It's easy and you can choose different streams if your rip has different language subtitles.
The subtitler filter for VirtualDub takes a Sub Station Alpha script and puts those subtitles in the VirtualDub output. If you have a .ssa script it's as easy as picking the filename.
Sub Station Alpha is a program for creating a script. This is what you use to type in the words yourself, if you have a script or are a bilingual translator. It is designed to be used with a Video Tape genlock or Chromakey device, but can b used with .avi's if you use the subtitlr filter.
(Those are the "subtitle sofware" I know about, though you might be thinking about others.
