    does anyone know of a quicker way tp join 3 avi's as v'dub siad its going to take 5 and half hours

    Try VirtualDub in "Direct stream copy" mode.

    Are you going to be encoding to MPEG? If you are, you could always create an AviSynth script to (kind of) join them, so your encoder views it as just one AVI file. Or use Virtual Dub to frame-serve to your encoder...
