  1. hello, I have a project for school and I need some help. I need to take a few scenes from a movie, and edit them together, so that it looks nice. I tried going from the dvd to my camera (sony trv950), but when I tried to record on my camera, I got a copy protected message.

    I have:
Final Cut 3 and Final Cut 4
    OSex
    Dvd Backup

    Mac:
    G4 800MHz
    768 MB
    60GB with 60GB firewire
    Superdrive

Can someone please tell me how to get these to import, because FCP 3 says it will only import avi and quicktime files.

Help is greatly appreciated, as this project is due on Monday, thank you very much

    **EDIT**
I have a Superdrive and DVD2oneX, but I would rather not go that route, as I only have DVD-R's

First I'd say rip the DVD into chapters using OSeX (ie. movie with 15 chapters will give you 15 individual .vob files) and find the files with the scenes you want.

Download mpeg2decX (free) or DVDxDV ($) or Miraizon Cinematize ($)
    http://homepage1.nifty.com/~toku/software_en.html
    www.dvdxdv.com/
    www.miraizon.com/

Choose the .vob files with the scenes you want and convert them to a Quicktime DV stream (NTSC or PAL) depending on where you are.

Open FCP and import the DV streams you just created and edit them the way you want.

The easiest way is to use 0Sex and extract the chapter off the disc.

To import into FCP, you can use Mencoder to convert them to a or a divx format. On your machine, this shouldnt take long at all.

This will assure you that your movie will also remain in sync.

Simply launch the terminal and type

mencoder -oac pcm -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 [drag your vob file to the terminal window]

hit enter.... this will create a file in your home directory called "test.avi" that FCP will accept.

    Hope this helps.

Actually I did it all under OS 9. I ripped with YADE the entire movie, converted the clips I wanted to Motion JPEG A quicktime movies, converted those to DV, editted with iMovie, and exported back out. With OS X that process is much shorter, but at the time that was the best way for me.
