IFOEdit don´t add (sup) subtitels

This problem turned out when I found out that the fontsize of the subtitle in the authorized DVD was to big. I was trying to find out how to resize them, but I didn't find a way to do that, as I posted in another topic.

My latest try was to open the srt in srt2sup, made a supfile and them load that one together with the m2v and the ac3 when author the DVD. But after there was not subtitle on the DVD.

Maybe I did something wrong on the way:

1) Open the srt as "Open as text"
2) Change the global settings to the global font size that I want.
3) Select all lines of the subtitle.
4) Save the SUP file.

In Ifoedit I just klick on "DVD Author" and added the m2v, the ac3 and the sup file.

THW I used the guide "AVI to DVD guide" on doom9 for whole process before authoring.

What device did you use to play your DVD?

If I play one of my authored DVD's on my PC using PowerDVD, I also will not have subs, on my standalone they do work, but I have to activate them manually by pressing the subtitle button on my remote.

Did you check the subtitle color settings in srt2sup?

Under global settings you can choose colors for four different parts of the subs: background, outline, text and antialias.

Underneath, you can check or uncheck "trans". If all are checked, you will end up with transparent subtitles.

Afterwords you will have to add the color settings at the bottom of srt2sup into your VTS_01_0.IFO file to avoid having green subtitles.

So, now I have tested a little bit and found out some problems with the colors. Acutally I had all colors(0,1,2,3) set to the same color... So now I can see my sub on my set top box.

But this have shown some other problems:

1) I can not force linebreak in srt2sup. In the "edit subtitle text" it looks like this:
-What is your name?
-Paul.

But in the preview window above and when watching the DVD on my TV it looks like this:

-Whats is your name? -Paul.

So how do I solve this?

2) The letters in the subtitle aren't smooth. Which means that it is very hard to read the text on TV.

3) Since the dimension of the move is different to my TV I have added some black part above and below the screen in the AVISynch script. So my idea was that the subtiles should be seen there and not inteferring with the move, but I can't find a way to locate the subs under the move. I have set the global parameter to:

Vertical Alignment: Bottom
Horisontal Alignment: Center.
Justify: Center
Markers: Inverse

RLL encoding, Default Target and Auto Wrap are all set to on.

Maybe someone (Mr srt2sup?) have a clue about this?

Point 1, Srt2Sup has two methods of presenting subtitles:

1) The simple method confines the subtitles to a fixed area and wraps them once the edge of the fixed area is reached - the default.
2) Unsing line breaks.

To enable using line breaks in [Settings][Global] uncheck [Auto Wrap subtitles].

You may want to check for subtitles off screen if you uncheck this option!

Point 2, the quality of the subtitles is dependant on the quality of the True Type font you use. I use Arial Narrow in Bold mode. The Anti-Alias can help to smooth fonts.

Point 3, You need to move the "Target Area" down. In [Settings][Global] uncheck [Use Default Target]. You can now adjust the XY and width of the target area to be below the movie.

If you can capture a frams from the movie you can use this as a bitmap to position the subtitles.

Again you might want to check for off screen subtitles in the [Tools] menu before you create the SUP file.

Hi,

My wallet is very happy there is DVD-RW discs...

I think I have burned the same move at least 30 times now...

*The offscreen feature was new to me, but I wonder how srt2sup can check that? I tested with moving the sub out of the screen and then run the check. But it only find one line that was out of the screen, but when I watched it at the TV all subs were out!!



*As I mentioned, I have a black part below the move due to aspects ratio. So I have tried to move the subs to that area using the X1 and Y1 value. The problem is that one of the sub includes three lines and cannot be changed. So I have to base the X1/Y1 value on that. Which means that the first line is "in the movie". But that also means that ALL subs are "in movie" even if it just a "one line".

Is it a way to sort the subs "from the bottom", so only the subs with many lines are interferring with the movie?

Hi Again,

In [Settings][Global] the alignment settings are where the target area is in respect to the reference point:


top&left top&center top&right

middle&left middle(XY)center middle&right

bottom&left bottom&center bottom&right

So:

if you want subtitles to push up from a point use [top]

Subtitle Line 1
Subtitle Line 2
Subtitle Line 3
XY

if you want subtitles to push down from a point use [bottom]

XY
Subtitle Line 1
Subtitle Line 2
Subtitle Line 3

If you want to push down for most subtitles, but have a few that then dissapear of the bottom of the picture. Set either the XY or the target area different for these by removing the [use global] option and setting the position just for a few subtitles.

You may want to copy the global settings over to these non global subtitles to keep colours and fonts the same!

BTW, what is the meaning of the option "Markers"?

If you planning to do a new version in the future, It would be nice if some of the options that are hard to understand are explained, like the one with Alignment. My interpretation of that was that was only "valid" if you choose "Use default target".

This explanation can be done in the program or in a seperate document. That will reduce the numbers of strange questions here, I suppose.

Hi,

The markers are the box and cross hairs that are displayed when you go into [Alter subtitle layout]!

According to your background picture different markers show up better than others. Hence [black] [white] & [inverse].

Aha, so that is what "Alter subtitle layout" is for. A tested that one in the beginning, but saw nothing. I guess I had problem with the backgrund colour at that time.

That function generate another question from me. Is it possible that, in the "Alter subtitle layout", define where the real picture will be located in my TV. IF so, it would be easier to check were the subs will be located compared to the picture. If you have written a AVI Synch Script you have all information to define that I suppose.

Hi Mad Man,

You can change the bitmap you use to set the layout (from the test card with the cat).

Capture an image from your movie and use that instead!

In [settings[global] click on the background button to choose an new image!

hello,

my situation is quite difficult. i'm experimenting with .sup and don't have any dvd-burner, so i cannot check the results in a tv. the only way for me to check them would be in the PC by means of a DVD player (software). however, it seems PowerDVD will not display authored subtitles, as it has been reported in this thread.

so the question is... does anyone know of ANY dvd player (software) that displays authored subtitles??

i need it, i really need it. i have no other way to check the results... and yes, i plan to buy a dvd-burner in a near future. but i need some help now.
