i have bought a sony DVD RW DW-U10A and am having problems getting it to read any disk i put into the drive, (DVDS and CDS ). When i put a disk in the light stays on for 4-5 mins then goes out but nothing is displayed when i go to my computer /"x" drive/explore.
I have my DVDrw-drive as master and HDD as slave on IDE1 ,and DVD-ROM as Secondary master on IDE2.
I have tried diffrent setups inside the box but to no avail. I am running win xp home with 2.6 ghz and 256 DDR Memory.
I have also upgraded with firmware to change the drive to DVDRW DRU-500A which i have managed sucessfully using firmware version 2.0g.
After reading several forums i also downloaded forceaspi and installed it also checking other aspi layer and installing as required so i think that there is nothing else to do so i am COMPLETLEY helpless as what to do next.
    Does anyone have any suggestions

First you could go into hardware properties and make sure the drive is using DMA, maybe its set to PIO and it dosent like it.

Or how ow about setting H/D as Master and DVD-RW as Slave on IDE1, how you have it set seems weird to me, i always thought IDE1 needed the hardrive thats going to be used for the O/S set as master first, thats how ive always done it and everyone i know has done it that way since well... forever. If i were you i'd try just the HD set as Master on IDE1 and the DVD-RW set as slave or master on IDE2 is probably the first way to go imho (if the PIO/DMA thing dosent work) and work from there.

    Thanks for your reply
DMA is set and i have set HDD to master and DVD RW DRU 500A to master on ide 2 but it stll does not read any inserted original DVD-ROM or software i have (xp home cd).
(I was only trying diffrent setups to see if that was the solution as i read it on another post in this forum)

Was the drive working before you upgraded the firmware, and has it ever worked since you bought it?

The only other things i can suggest are, cleaning it, and maybe trying a different IDE cable.

If it was working before and its suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason then maybe it just died.
