no sound after encoding

Hi

I'm trying to convert a VIDEO_TS folder to .AVI using mencoder (MPEG4), but every time I try to encode, the file I end up with has no sound, whether I do the entire thing or a 5-sec test clip. When I click "play" BEFORE I encode, the sound comes through, though. What can I do to fix this?
