According to people who used win2000, win2000 and XP are almost identical but xp looks more attractive

  2. I have XP - it's actually a different animal once you turn off all the "fluffy" new user feature.

Some programs aren't XP ready yet though.

want to know what the "best" OS made by MS was/is ??

WinCE ... no legacy code ... very stable ... very fast -- I'm not joking - built from the ground up - too bad it's dead.

I've never tried XP or Linux, so I didn't rate them. I love the stability of Windows 2000, but it doesn't support a few of my PC games.

I have to leave my comuter running for a while, for internet purposes. Win2k shows no signs of lag, and its very stable.

I hear a lot of good things about linux but i personally have never used it.

As far as XP goes......dont like it at all

I've used all the MS OSes from 3.1 to XP now... 2000 Professional was my favourite because it never crashed or messed with me. XP is just like that, but looks nicer if you use the silver theme. Hehe...
Plus, XP can emulate Win9x/ME if you go to the advanced tab of program shortcuts. So if you had games or whatever that didn't work after you upgraded to 2K, in XP they work again. Another thing I like about XP is the speed. I haven't seen this speed since before M$ merged Internet Explorer with the Windows shell. 95 would run pretty quick as I vaguely remember, then when I got IE4 it ran like crap. 98 and 98SE were faster than 95 somewhat. ME made me format and get 2K two weeks after upgrading to it. 2K increased speed once you got into it, but still took a long time to boot into it and shut down. XP just fixed it all... It's 2000 on E.

  8. been using WIN98 Gold for 4 years, works great for me, why change when it ain't broke.
I have full Verisons of WIN NT and WIN2000 Professional, hated them both, drivers, drivers, drivers no support for older cards and forget about eithernetting between a win98 machine and win2000 computer.
Plus My Brother is one of the few Offical Long Time Microsoft Beta testers (10 years), he has all the operating systems, tested them all, even had XP 2 years ago, he still uses WIN98 Gold on his home computer but WIN NT on all business Computers, how do you think I get all these Full version OS Systems and before you say Illegal, I have licenses for them all.
No way will I ever use XP I don't want any system you have to install online, and after 3 hardware changes you must reregisitor before it will work again. Plus I don't need any company Knowing everything that I install or had installed on my computer - hint hint( remember my brother tests these LONG before the general public gets their hands on it). Plus I have 4 computers in my house I don't need to pay for 4 more licenses.

number 1 reason to move off Win98 - if you have any program crash and you've been encoding a movie for 14 hours and you "blue screen" you have to re-boot - one program crashes and it affects everything running

same thing in Win2000 - you just end the process

Win95/98 based on DOS based kernal
    WinNT/2000 based on NT kernal

    NT/2000 will ACTULLLY use RAM above 128 - 95/98 -- won't

Why little susie, I guess you are! Then again I guess I am too. Alot of people report back-to-back problems with certain hardware and software combinations while others with the same configuration have none or very little.

Recently upgraded to XP from 2000. XP boots faster and seems to load apps faster. Haven't seen many bugs - but I don't care much for the new user interface. Luckly you can change it to the Classic style.

Ran 2000 for a couple years. Rock solid performer.

Before that ran 98SE. This one sucked big time, constantly crashed and absolutely no security.

  12. I have to say i can only compare WinME and Win98Gold.
Windows Millenium Edition ******* sucks. Windows 98 Gold is way more stable than ME. Thank God for that reduced upgrade price to XP from HP.

  13. Win2k Sp2 for me.

    - Better Memory Management (vs. Win9x/ME)
    - Excellent Stability
    - Excellent Compatibility
    - Internet Sharing
    - Software RAID

XP is the new flavor in town, but I'll wait until at least the first Service Pack before I join the bandwagon...Until then Win2k for me.

  15. The best operating sytem by far for non scientific use is something most of you haven't even heard of: BeOS which was build from the ground up for multimedia. A true 64 bit multithreaded journaled file system that can accept a single file up to 18,000 petabytes! How big is that? HUGE. The sum total of humanity's recorded data going all the way back as far as recorded history... all the books, music, movies, the works... would fit in about 100 petabytes.

BeOS is what Linux pretends to be and much more.

Major problem. So far it has terrible support for current video cards, there simply aren't many drivers and you are mostly forced to use old cards. So until drivers are written, lots of luck. Ditto for other hardware too. In that respect it is way behind Linux which itself is still far behind Windows. Somewhat "easier" than Linux to install.

One nice thing, you can mount just about any other file format from within BeOS. So you can have your Windows too.

BeOS interface is GUI and similar to Windows.

  17. XP Proffesional vs Windows 2000, I've tried both to their full potential and I like XP better for the following reasons:

XP has much better multimedia capabilities than XP
XP has a more multimedia software out of the box
XP is easier to operate and to add hardware
XP loads and shuts down faster
XP doesn't crash, or programs under XP don't crash (some programs under 2000 do crash from time to time)
XP accepts and interacts with my Sony PictureBook laptop thru 1394, 2000 doesn't have drivers for that "device"
XP can run most game programs 2000 can't
XP rocks, looks better and it is newer

I only had two problems with XP :
1.- My Hagiwara SmartMedia r/w caused XP to reboot it self
2.- Intel Anypoint wireless network is not supported, not even after installing 2000 drivers.

Number two problem was the reason I went to 2000 (which I'm currently running), because my daughter will kill me if she doesn't have internet access in her room, once intel comes up with drivers for that device I'm switching back to XP.

I think that once there are drivers for every piece of hardware XP will be the best OS out there to date.

Linux is really good, it is better than any Windows out there, but it still has a lot to grow until then XP is going to be my preference.

BeOS was written for Mac - it was supposed to be the new Mac OS at one time - until they went with a FreeBSD Kernal

so to nit-pick it's similar to Mac OS X because thats what it was originally designed for
    Quote Quote
  19. Since Stinky wants to nitpick, remember that Apple stole the GUI design from Xerox. Then Billy G. "stole" it from them.

The story goes something like this: The R&D Dept. at Xerox presented a new invention to the Xerox board of directors, mostly a bunch of old farts that said the invention has no practical purpose. What invention? The mouse. Now imagine if Xerox would have had a smarter board of directors. Poor Bill Gates might have ended up selling life insurance and Xerox may have written a really cool operating system.

  20. i have never tried Win2000. i've always been told that its more for office work and not personal home enjoyment. i have used Win98 and WinME. 98 gave me more problems and crashes. it was a constant thing. i call it the work from hell. and i tried to use it multiple times. so far WinMe has run smooooothly without a glitch. i don't know why because everyone else i talk to says the opposite........

  21. My daughter's PC uses ME as well as my Laptop, I've noticed that ME either runs perfect or totally sucks. At work someone bought an HP computer with ME, it never worked.

I've had great experiences with ME, once I contacted ME customer support line due to Quicktime taking over my icons, even their technical support is great (nothing compared to when 98 was released, those times sucked if you tried contacting customer support)

I am a newbie to linux, but I like SuSe 7.2 very much.

The best OS I used till now, is Win2000 SP2. I don't need XP at the moment, but I heard that's much much faster than Win2000.

Finally! Someone that also realises the greatness of BeOS. Has anyone here even heard of BeOS, let alone used it?
BeOS is a media based OS, it is excellent in what it is coded for - BeOS has its shortcomings like all OSes, but with respect to what many use windoze for, it is a damn site better at the job. I dont agree with it being better than Linux... nearly as good in my humble opinion. It doesnt have the flexibility and it doesnt have the hacker community support either as Linux does. BeOS is a revolutionary OS all in all and it deserves more respect.
