I want to know the real size of the following media:
    + DVD (4.7)
    + CD - 75min and 80min
    + DVD double sided (9.4)

For example, the capacity for a DVD-R or DVD+RW is 4.7, but in real life you can only burn up to 4.3G.

I want to know this, because I want to create a small program, that will take a list of files and will choose the best way to store them, using the minimum amount of media, if possible.

    thanks

Why? It's all carved in stone, jsut get used to bianary.

    4,700,000 bytes for a DVD. That is not 4.7 GB. It is 1 KB/1024 bytes x 1Mb/1024 KB x 1 GB/1024 MB = 4,700,000 /(1024*1024*1024) = 4.3772161 GB

    Same applies to CDR's

Ok, so the capacity they have is in bytes. I just need the conversion to KB!

    1024 bytes - 1KB

    thanks

Also, maybe a little bit more technical, do you know how much space it takes for the firectory and file information to be written?

Ideally you have 4.3772161 GB, but you also need space for all the file and directory structure. I wan to make as accurate as possible
