  1. I have 2 questions.

Any guideance or ideas would be greatly appreciated! I'm starting to get frustrated!

First off, here are the general specs to my pc:
P4, 2.6Ghz, 256 DDR Ram, 180 GB HD, 30 GB HD, Sony DVD +/- RW.

    1. I am starting to back up my DVD collection. and in doing so, I've used several different programs. mostly Invideo DVD copy. Every once in a while, my system reboots out of nowhere! i'm ready to put a hammer through it. i know that won't fix it, but at least i'll feel good for about 4 seconds!!!

    2. I use DVD decrypter to rip the DVD to my HD, then Invideo DVD Copy to copy to DVD. it seems that when i do that, when i go to copy to DVD, the program READS the DVD first THEN copies??? thus taking about 45-50 minutes for the whole process. does EVERY program READ the entire movie before it actually writes it? it makes sense if you're going disc to disc, but i'm going HD to disc. doesn't seem logical.

this is my first post btw!! I've learned alot alot already from this site, and i hope to gain a little more insight from the group!

    Thanks all!!!!

IF your using windows xp Right click on My computer and select properties. Goto Advanced tab, the click the settings button Under the "STart up and recovery" section. Uncheck the restart on error option then click ok and ok again.

Now windows will not restart when it encounters and error, this will not fix the problem but might let you see the actual error so that we might have an idea of whats going on.

BTW how long has the restarting been happening? And have you added anything or changed any parts on your system recently?

  3. OK....done what you suggested. now we'll wait and see what goes on! thanks a ton!

i've not added any hardware. just software. as i said, i've been looking for the quickest way to burn my backups.

    Thanks!!!!!!

  4. i keep getting the BLUE screen abotu physical dump. blah blah blah.

i think i 'm gonna reformat my 30G and make it one drive rather than two 15 partitions. give that all to windows.

    see if that helps.

i also could use more ram, i'm sure. 256 isn't much these days.

    thanks.

There should be something in that "blah blah blah" to help us figure out what the error is, it could very well be hardware instead of software. Looks for something that looks like this stuff_stuff_stuff_stuff and let us know what it says.

  6. for the record, i just remembered that i did in fact add new hardware. to try and burn disc to disc, i took out by CDR drive and put my old DVD drive back in. but i think it's too slow. the drive is probably 3+ years old. i'm sure it's only 4x at best.

I had this problem recently, and in the end amounted to faulty memory.
    Good luck

  9. Will,

I just that entire thread you referenced. excellent information!!! although i only understand about 20 % of the technichal talk, i learned alot!

I just did a system format last night of my c: I don't keep alot on my system that i'm afraid to lose. i've grown used to having to reformat for numerous reasons!

I'm also gonna look into buying more ram. and if at that time, i'm still getting reboots, i'll install the new stick without the old to see if anything happens.

One of the early posts in your thread asked about PSU. I put a new one in my PC when I upgraded from AMD to P4. I'd be lying if I said I knew the voltage I bought. I'll have to check on that. If my memory serves me right (for once), I think the reboots started happening since I started backing up my DVD collection. So maybe it is about all the power being used.

I've got plenty of possibilies to look out for! I'll get to checking and post back later when I come up with some answers....or more problems!

Thanks everyone for you the replies!!!

  10. AAWWWW HORSECHIT!

i installed nothing but DVD DECRYPTER and INTERVIDEO DVD COPY.
(well MS OFFICE and AIM too)

so far, i've gotten the "windows has encountered a problem...notify microsoft..." message twice. and a reboot once.

I did that RAM test that was on WILL HEY's link to previous thread. i ran it for 30 minutes and got no errors. can the stick still be bad if that didn't give an error?

I have Pinnacle Instant copy 8 , but it freezes when i try to load it.

seems strange that any DVD burning i try to do is when it occurs. that's leading me to believe that it's not bad ram. if the ram is bad, wouldn't i have problems doing everything?

i'm ready to just give up making these backups! so far, nothing but headaches!

    test your RAM with memtest
    it will detect any errors...

  12. Does it read the right amount of RAM when booting up?? 256 512 or whatever you have or some strange #. I've had RAM that was bad and only work sometimes. It would work great for days on end then crap for a day or two then work again. I hadn't done anything other than surf the net. No installing/uninstalling or anything. If it does it with all RAM, not just one stick I would think your MoBo is messed up

Also Brand is the RAM name brand a some cheapy stuff?

  13. i ram MEMTEST86 for 8 hours and got no errors.

and for the record, i've been saying i had 256 RAM, but i actually have 512! oops. i noticed that on during the MEMTEST.

i'm going to take out the extra DVD ROM drive. since it's so slow anyways. just in case it's taking up wattage from the PSU.

  15. I have the same problem I just built my new PC

    P4 2.6
    512 SDRAm
    120GB SATA HardDrive
    OPTORITE DVD BURNER
    Lite on DVDROM
    ASUS P4P800 MB 800 FSB
    AGP 8X 64SDRAM GeForce4 MX 440 Video Card

    With Windows XP

The pc Reboots Everytime I Run a Multimedia Player like

Power DVD or Creative Labs PCDVD or Windows Media PLayer or win Amp and I insert and close the CD tray.

And just when It begins to read the CD Windows reboots.

It is really fustrating. and it happens on both drives.

This does not happen sometimes when I already have the cd or dvd inserted and then I run the Software player after the pc detects the disc.

Any clue guys what why the PC reboots and hoe to solve my problem.

    Please I need Help.

    Thanks.

  16. One Question ?

Did your Optorite Burner come with B's Gold and B's Clip, and are they installed on your machine ?

I had exactly this problem on mine (system crash on CD or DVD drive being used)

Uninstalling B's software wasn't enough, I had to do a system restore to a date before the software was installed to correct the problem.

I hope this is some help.

  17. PC at it again! i got a new pack of discs today. (DVD -R) and i burned one movie...fine...went to burn second and got blue PHYSICAL DUMP screen. here's the pertinent info:

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    blah blah blah

    STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x00000005, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xF83C0FFE)

    NDIS.sys - address F83C0FFE base at F83AC000, Datestamp 3b7dc5b1

    blah blah blah
it only seems to do this during the compression/read step in the INVIDEO DVD COPY software.

i'm gonna try and start using something else.

    any ideas?

  19. I've looked it about 100 places for info on this. Thanks for the links, by the way.

But there's nothing out there that is straight forward.

What I've taken from it, is that it can be almost anything in my computer that's causing this. And furthermore, i'm thinking this may just be a WINDOWS XP issue that may or may not get fixed in one of their updates.

Who knows! i think my computer will be the death of me, one of these days!

    thanks all for your input!

    @angelog22

This is another shot in the dark, but I was having a similar problem a little while back, system would lock up and/or reboot (mostly REBOOT )

Turned out my CPU fan was malfunctioning and causing my CPU to overheat when I ran anything exteamly processor intensive (like video encoding/re-encoding).

I replaced the heatsink and fan and have not had the problem since...

You can get a program (Motherboard Monitor 5) the you can use to monitor the CPU and System temp from here.

    http://mbm.livewiredev.com/download.html

It works (for me anyway) and it's free.

    Hope this helps...

    Later,
