are there any recorders that will compress audio to AC3 or MPEG2 instead of recording to PCM? I'm thinking of using a standalone to capture VHS but I'd like to use a higher bitrate for video and compress the audio. I'll transfer it to my PC to author menus into it so either compressed format would work as I'll be re-encoding the audio to AC3 on the PC anyway. I just hate to waste the bitrate on the audio when I'm going to compress it anyway.

Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
any particular Panasonic models or do all of them support AC3 encoding?

I would say all. But check it on their website. Read specifications or download manuals. I hope you are not expecting that somebody own all of their model so he can answer it :P

no, but I know a lot of people use the e50s and e80s which would probably be what I'd get. I'm looking into it myself so thanks for the input.
