I recently booted up my computer, and when XP starts, there is no desktop!!! I can see the desktop background(picture), but none of my icons, or the start menu.... I rebooted, and there is still no screen, not unless I choose to restart my system, and I am downloading something, then the start menu comes back for a quick second, then continues on with the restart process... Therefore, I have to command everything in my system with the Windows Task Manager.... Please HELLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!

try to boot in safe mode and if you can run system file checker in the run command, just type SFC. run scandisk too actually I think it's CHKDSK in xp, run it from command window

try this
hit alt+crtl+del and go to processes and then start new process and type in explorer.exe and see if it comes back up -
correct me if im wrong, but isnt that the "default" XP desktop presentation? Dont you hvae to actually go and say "Display desktop icons" and even then its not what you all are use to say in 2000.
i remember putting XP on my notebook and was like WTF, where is MY COMPUTER etc etc.
i ended up staying with 2000 but i remember it being like that initially -
No, the desktop is supposed to be automatically displayed in XP....

You could try to boot from the Xp CD-ROM and "repair". I can't think of anything else without physically lookin at it
Also you might have a virus. Run a virus scanner if you can
