My best friend, who is an Apple finatic also, told me tha Apple was planning on releasing a portable video player, similar to archos and lyra, but have a 7 inch screen, a 40-80 gig HD, and playback capabiliies of MOV, MP4, M4P, MP3, and maybe Mpeg 2.

I am not sure if he is correct or not. Have any of you heard of this?

I recall reading on several Mac news sites quotes from Jobs saying an Apple iPod-type video player would be prohibitively expensive for Apple to produce. I can't think why, especially since Sony is considering doing it. That, and weren't people willing to pay $499 for a 5gb audio-only player just over 1 year ago? Apple's missing an opportunity here. I would gladly pay $499 for a 20gb hard drive based video player that supported MPEG1 and all of the QuickTime codecs, that could also be connected to a television. I mean, I would gladly buy this device from Apple -- can't trust other companies to be Mac friendly, or to even do it right.

Paraphrasing, of course, but Steve Jobs said in a CNBC interview that their research saw no real opportunity in the portable video player market. The iPod was the result of that research, and it is a tremendous success.

The only reason I would want such a player is to play videos to an audience--kinda like a DJ would use an iPod. I wouldn't need it for personal use.
