  1. Ok, so now I have a working copy of DVDBackup, and have read the instructions on how to use it. So I think that my problem lies in the fact that the blank DVD-R's that I have are formatted for pc use only. Would this be possible? I thought a blank dvd-r was a blank dvd-r and that it wouldn't matter if you stick one in a mac or a pc.

So here is the error message that I got from Toast when trying to burn.
    Sense Key = Illegal request
    Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
Cannot write medium - incompatible format.

This is what leads me to believe that I need to go out and purchase mac compatible dvd-r's. Is this indeed the case? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  2. This may sound like a stupid question, but you are sure you have DVD-r's?

I have used several different types of blanks in two different macs, 17" iMac and a 17" PBook never had a problem like that.

Have used Apple, Imation, Shintaro and Teac...

I have had issues with toast reporting sense errors and other things, when Dragonburn or DiscBlaze would hapily burn away.

What brand of DVD-R's are you trying?

When I first started, I bought a pack of Memorex discs. Of the five, four had that same error, and the fifth wouldn't play in my standalone DVD player. It sounds like a waste but start out with more expensive, higher quality media first (to make sure your setup works), then breakout with the cheap stuff.

Higher quality does not equal more expensive. Ritek media is very well-priced, and is compatible with all players I've tried (lots and lots) from all major brands, which is more than I can say for any other media at any price. I think the best place to get it at the moment is www.allmediaoutlet.com. As far as that error goes, I got the same one with PioData media when I tried using Toast 6.0.3, right after upgrading. I tried with version 6.0 and the same piece of dvd-r media, and it worked fine. I'm not sure if I needed to restart my computer after upgrading Toast, but 6.0.3 didn't seem to work that time.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

  7. From my personal experience, Memorex dvd-r/rws are crap. I just got some Verbatim discs and they work great.

I agree, but be sure that your Verbatims are DataLife Plus and not just DataLife. From what I've heard the DataLife disks are some of the crappiest media available, but the DataLife Plus disks are one of the best media brands.
