Help: DVD files (VOB), to making VCD...

Help is needed to getting DVD files which are saved on my hard drive to be put onto a normal CD-R or several CD-R's, so that they can be treated like a normal film when playing on the PC like scene selection etc.

I wanna treat it like a VCD or something similar so it can be played in my DVD player aswell (VCD S-VCD compatiable), using these files; VOB file, IFO file, BUP file. Can you tell me which each file one responseabilty is, what its main criteria, and how i can make it viewable like DVD style, on CDR's.

I'm not a DVD expert so I can't define all those files for you. The VOB is a Video OBject file which contains the audio and the mpeg2 video information.

It's possible to get the whole movie on one CD in VCD format, or onto several disks in SVCD format. If you really want it to be like the original DVD then it's best to get yourself a DVD burner, CD's just don't hold enough to create the entire DVD experience.

I think you should try your hand at making a few VCD/SVCD's before getting more advanced and creating disks with menu's and chapters. Here's a comprehensive guide that can take you from DVD to VCD/SVCD. I recommend using these tools in order: Smartripper>DVD2AVI>TMPGEnc>VCDEasy.

Edit: I found this in the "What is DVD-R" section, you might want to do some reading as this site has a lot of information.

. BUP = Backup files of the IFO files.

. IFO = The IFO files includes information such as chapters, subtitle tracks and audio tracks.

.VOB = The VOB files contains the actual video,audio,subtitles and menus."

you just need, as zippy said, is dvd2avi tmpgenc and then burn with nero or vcdeasy.

if i had ermmmmm...... 3.5gb worth of VOB. I know its like hog long is a peice of string, but concidering it takes 2 seperate process of file formatting, and then burning to disc.

how long do you reckon the whole process...

DVD2AVI is fast, 15 mins. or so on my 1.6 GHz. system.

TMPGEnc can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days, it depends on your system (esp. the CPU) and your settings. It usually takes me 5 hours or so using 2-pass VBR, motion estimate (fast) and no filtering. I encode over night. 8)
