  1. Ok, I have an APEX 500w and I have problems w/ most VCD's I make. Most of them have one or the other problem. I usually make my VCD's encoded by TMPGenc. Sometimes they are downloaded. I note that usually I have either the audio being out of SYNC or The picture slows down suddenly at what seems to be random points in the movie. The audio sysnc is a constant thing. The videos always play fine on my computer using windows media player. I have found it makes no difference if the videos are pal or ntsc. I know this must be something w/ the player! I just want to know how to get around the bugs this player has. I DO know that I have NEVER had a problem w/ a movie that was encoded w/ TMPGenc as one of SEFY's Variable bitrate VCD templates. It seems to happen when the files are a constant bitrate. Has anyone else ran into these problems and know of ANY solutions to create GOOD working VCD's w/ the APEX 500. I know this is NOT my player because I know 3 other people who have the player and have the same problems w/ the videos they make. Any info???? PLEASE!!!

  2. dude, if you go to the column at left to dvd players and do a search on your player, you'll see that the Apex 500 will not play VCD's or SVCD's

  3. ummmmm, thebach, yes it does. why don't u try that search yourself.

  4. cycletron, i'm not here to tell you to search or anything, i'm here to try and figure out your problem and hopefully to fix it, you mentioned when you encode using VBR, you do not have a sync problem on your DVD, and yet with the standard VCD cbr, you do have a sync problem, so:

    1) Have you encoded the same movie source ?
    2) What is your source ? DVD or a DivX/AVI file ?
    3) Have you tried playing back the A/V sync disc on a diffrent player ?
    4) How does it play on your PC ?

  5. I have the same problem with any downloaded movie from the net and any APEX player - 500W, 660, 600a but my Toshiba 2050 plays them fine, but if I capture or encode my own VCD's from any source they play back perfect in any of my APEX DVD players, so its something with the DIVX encoded movies from the net and APEX players. Not per say VCD in general, I have over 30 VCD's I have made from different sources from my computer using my capture card as AVI or MPEG2.
I use the happuage PVR card.

Part of the confusion here is that thxkid referred to his player as both the "500W" and "500". While that's understandable, trust me, it's a big mistake. The 500W and 500 are very different models.

The 500W can definitely play VCDs and SVCDs.

One version of the 500 can play VCDs and SVCDs while the other version supposedly cannot. (Yes, that's right, there are two players, both labeled as Apex AD-500, with vastly different hardware inside and thus vastly different capabilities...)

  7. Yes, I had this same problem with TMPGEnc encoded VCD's and my Apex 703. No matter what I tried -- different bit rates, CBR/VBR, frameserving, multiplexing with bbMPEG, etc -- I still had the problems. SVCD's encoded with TMPGEnc work great... I just couldn't get VCD's to work without the sync/speed up problem.

My research indicated that TMPGEnc was the cause and not the Apex DVD player. I had no problems playing VCD's created using other programs like the Panasonic Encoder. I decided to research the problem in this forum and I quickly learned that many others have this problem (with many makes and models of DVD players). Luckily I stumbled across a posting that recommended a solution -- multiplexing the files using the old Xing Encoder. Let me tell you, this did the trick...

I now encode the video and audio separately using TMPGEnc and then put 'em together with Xing. So far every video has played flawlessly in my Apex 703. I still don't know WHY this happens or what Xing does to "correct" it... Another question for another day, I suppose.

By the way, the last I heard the Xing Encoder was commercial only software. I am not even sure if it is still for sale or not. If you go this route, you may need to look around for it.

    Good Luck!

  8. Regarding Xing Encoder, last i've heard Xing Technology has been bought out by RealNetworks, there is a trial version available for download, unfortunatly the full commercial product costs about 250$, even though it does not take advantage of latest hardware and is no longer being supported or maintained.
