Hi,
Ive been stubmling in the dark for many hours now without any luck. A friend of mine gave me a DVD that is there is something very wrong with.
It wont play on my PC, and it wont play on my Standalone. But if I use WinDVD to open single files, the VOB files playes correct.
My questions are then,
a)
is there a way to "author" a new DVD with exisiting VOB files without reencoding the VOB files with e.g. tempGenc?
Ulead DVD Workshop can import MPG2 files, (I guess the VOB files are this), but it wont import VOB files directly.
b)
Is there a way to convert VOB files to compliant MPG2 files, so It will import without reencoding?

Some time ago I also got hold of a disk which plays nice on the PC, with meny and all, but it didnt wont play on my Standalone.
I would think sometimes there would be the need to "fix" ecisting authored DVDs,
Hope anyone has any tips for me here, since Im about to give up on this subject,
Regards,

You can use Smartripper to demux the VOB files (click on "Demux to extra file"), so you get a m2v (video) and mp2 (audio). You can open both with DVD Workshop to author a new DVD, but you'll loose the whole menu structure. If you want to keep it you'll need to use IFOEdit, but it's not easy to use...

VOB files are already compliant MPEG2 files (or else they wouldn't be .VOB files). You can do what you want (and even keep the menus) provided that the original is not on dual layer media (or, the main movie is less than ~4GB long and you are willing to loose most of the extras).
Is there something wrong with the original disk? Sometimes, if you clean the boogers and stuff off the disk, it will play okay.ICBM target coordinates:

Thanks for the replies.
I downloaded and installed SmartRipper, but this doesnt work very well. Ive verified with other DVDs who works fine, but not this one.
After analyzing the IFO file, (smartripper goes through the disk in its own window) - and it results in an error which SmartRipper prompts:
"Cannot change Visible in OnShow or OnHide"
After this it returns to the program and whatever I press gives another error. So im back to scratch again,As the other one mentione, I might clean the surface of the disc, but there is no problem here since its brand new.
The problem is somewhere in the build of the disk, ifo or I dont know. The menu system is probably all screwed up, since the only VOB files that plays normally from file open in WinDVD are the movie VOBs. All I want to do is trashbin whatever structure is on this disk, get out the movie VOBS and put them back to a new freshly DVD build.
So im back to scratch, how to convert the VOBs back to importable XXX into eg. Ulead Workshop... Any other tools than SmartRipper?

Some .VOBs - depending on how they were created - can be opened in Microsoft Windows Media Player.
Then - you can simply choose the SAVE AS command and rename the .VOB extension to be .MPG.
Another option is to use an application such as Ulead VideoStudio...

...which has a so-called "DVD-VR CAPTURE PLUG-IN" that allows the user to extract the raw MPEG data from homemade .VOB files.
