  1. Ok folks here's the story.

I recently obtained two WB movies and thought I would try to make a back-up (first time at this).

I ripped with the latest DVDdecrypter (in file mode), then compressed down with DVD shrink v3b5. Bruning was done with B's Recorder Gold 5. OS is XP (Japanese) and the burner is an LG GMA-4020B. The original disc is region 2 (Japan), and the movie was widescreen.

The video preview looked okay while reencoding, but after that, we have problems. Playback of the compressed version yields first (and not very serious) a rather dark picture. I had to boost the brightness rather dramatically to get the proper levels. Second, and very serious, I now have major screen corruption issues during playback. Whether I play the original DVD, the Full ripped file, or the compressed rip, I have the same problems:

    1) A fat vertical pink bar about 1/3 width from the right edge of the image.
    2) The right 1/3 of the image is on the left 1/3 of the screen.
    3) The Right 1/3 of the window features layered portions of the left and right 1/3's of the actual image.

    4) When playing a DivX file in 4:3 format, I have a the whole image, but the pink bar runs down the right edge of the image.

I have tried reinstalling WinDVD (4.???), as well as my graphics driver (SiS 650_651_M650_740; chip SiS 640 Rev 00; also using Sis AGP driver 1.09 and SiS IDE graphic utility). SiS is Silicon Integrated Systems.

So far, still nothing. I certainly hope the hardware is not corrupted, but I can't tell on my own.

Lastly, I did not check the ripped file before I reencoded it, but since the original disc is playing funny, too, I don:t think its simply a conversion error.

I fear I am looking at a reformat here (although I'd rather not). Is there a possibility decrypter or shrink is screwing up my drivers? Or could the drivers be configured to recognize these little toys?
Someday I'll know what I'm doing....

  3. stand alone---worked fine on a region 2 -rw compatible. and there were no brightness problems.

i figured i can try it on my laptop at work (region 1). but i was worried about the possibility of corrupting a company pc. especially with the tech guy on the other side of the globe. i'll have to give it a shot now that it works on the stand alone.

i guess i just have video issues. i might try reformatting anyway, just to see if these go away.

  4. codec wise, i have divx 5.1 installed. after that wpm 9, but playback was goofy before i updated wpm. windvd is the version that came with the machine.

is there one specific folder where all the codecs go to play? (bad pun)
