  1. I've been trying to covert some fansubbed anime I have in DivX to VCD to play in my DVD player. Everytime I try to endcode it, the video size is 312x240. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it supposed to be 352x240. Also somehow the math doesn't seem to work out for me, as the video starts out as 640x480.

Anyhow that's one problem I'd like to figure out. This is also leading to the problem of the subtitles in my anime being cut off due to over scan. I'm using TMPEGEnc. Is there anyway to get it to convert to the proper size (probably not as I've tried several things suggested right here), or is there a more preferable program to use for coverting these DivX to VCD quality MPG?

  2. Have you used the standard templates in TMPGEnc? They should set the output resolution to 352 x 288 (PAL) or 352 x 240 (NTSC).

It might be worth giving DVD2SVCD a try - it can do VCD's too - and it should work with the standard (free) version of TMPGEnc if you're only doing MPEG-1 (VCD).

DVD2SVCD takes a lot of the guesswork & experimentation out of the process.

On the other hand, you can use TMPGEnc's arrange setting function to resize, or use VirtualDub / AviSynth and frameserve into TMPGEnc. I have heard of people doing this to overcome overscan if it's forcing subtitles off the screen (especially in fansubbed anime!).

  3. In TmpGenc, load your template, then under settings, advanced tab, video arrange method select Center (custom size). Then select settings that will give you 10-15 pixels border all round. This should maintain the aspect ratio correctly whilst allowing the Subs to be read. The exact number of pixels required is determined by your TV as different TV's overscan different amounts.

  4. theDruid: I've tried all sorts of settings in TMPEGEnc and still comes out 312x240. As for DVD2SVCD I just tried that and it generated MPG files with no audio. Rater the files were *.mpv.

bugster: Tried this also but the video is chopped off, quite literally centred so that with a 640x480 video (the original size of the AVI file) you only see the centre 352x240.

  5. In TmpGenc, with divx source, make sure the source aspect ratio setting is set to 1:1 (VGA)

  6. same thing for some of my downloaded anime avis.

see, i got this .avi file with subtitiles in it. i cant play at first because i dont have the codecs for it. i think it was the sound codec for vbr and acm. i got the virtualdub and fix that problem. so i decided to burn it into a cd, making it a vcd using tmpgnc. now this is my problem.

when i played it in a dvd player, the subtitiles are nearly gone and i can only see the upper half of the sentences making it harder for me to read. i tried to playing it in a vcd player but the same thing happens. i watched the new edited avi and the mpg of it in WMP and it's fine.

i wish i can send a pic of it but i cant, since i cant make a screen shot out of a dvd/vcd screen that easily.

i tried the advice with adjusting the advance setting of the tmpgnc but i still cant see the whole subtitiles.
