  1. I use TMPGEnc to encode all my AVI/MPEGs to put on DVD disk, but when I encode the video to go on my 16.9 widescreen TV, I get black bars at the top and bottom.
But I cant seem to find the right settings to encode to, please can someone list some settings that I can try. It doesnt seem to matter what I set the source aspect to either.
Heres what I need to encode to:

    PAL MPEG2 16.9 widescreen

Please can someone help me out so I can try the other settings
    Regards

  2. Have you tried to follow some of the excellent guides provided here?
It might be that you are not setting the Video arrange method to "No Marging (keep aspect ratio). If you get a distorted picture when viewing it with your DVD player (WinDVD, etc) then you will have to select custom and modify the size yourself by double clicking the "clip frame" option.

I'd say the source aspect ratio should be left at 1:1 if the video file was originally encoded for use on PC

Make sure you select the DVD 16x9 PAL TEMPLATE using the WIZARD MODE. Make sure you set the aspect ratio of the incoming video correctly be it 1:1 VGA (for DivX/Xvid) or 4:3 or 16x9 etc.

If the input is a widescreen DivX/Xvid that has had the black cut off then simply select FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO) and the output will be A-OK.

If the input is widescreen but in a 4:3 ratio and still has the black bars then you need to go to the CLIP function in TMPGEnc and clip 72 from the top and 72 from the bottom (this is for a PAL source to a PAL DVD) and the output will be 16x9 ... in this case you would pick FULL SCREEN and NOT the FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO) option.

If the input is already 16x9 then simply select FULL SCREEN and the output will be 16x9

    P.S.
Please note that a 16x9 WS TV has an aspect ratio of about 1.77:1 whereas most movies are either 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 so there will still be some black above and below the image.

  4. Ok well Ive followed your advice and had a play around with all the different settings. Im still really confused about all these different aspects, and how do I find out what the source files aspect ratio is?
Anyway Ive tested a few to see what happens, and Ive got some to work on my 16.9 PAL TV in full widescreen, the only problem is when I view them on my computer theyre full screen and look really stretched!

I want it to be widescreen on my PC, and normal on my TV, how can I acheive this?

Ive found Clipping the bars and encoding gives me full screen 16.9, almost whatever i put as the source aspect ratio it still comes out 16.9 full widescreen on my TV.

How do the studios encode their films?
    It cant be this confusing!

    Please help me out
    Best regards
