  1. So, I moved the "bad" VIDEO_TS folder from my V drive (140G) to my X drive (same HDD, different partition, 100G)- and they played on PowerDVD absolutely *perfectly* - not a block or scrambled bit anywhere.

    Go figure.

So MackemX and ddlooping, it looks like it really does have something to do with the size of the HDD.

Can't say I completely understand it, but glad I figured it out finally!

just do a defrag on your partition when you get the time

when did you split the drive?, was it basically empty?

Maybe it's better you join the two partitions back together and defrag the whole drive then split again, though it would take ages

  3. I split the drive when it was brand new and completely empty - which would be last week! Since the drive was installed last week the only things I've saved to it are ripped DVDs .... But I defragged the large partition anyway about two nights ago, when I was struggling with this problem.

It's all made more mysterious to me by the fact that I'd originally ripped about five disks to the large partition and three of them were pretty much perfect (a few occasional stutters and green blocks, especially with the menus, but nothing that interfered with watching). The other two were scrambled - I reripped them a few times each and then again after defragging. So is it something about these disks? And if so, why do they play perfectly from the DVD drive and rip perfectly to the smaller partition?

Whatever the reason, ripping to the smaller partition has worked perfectly every time, and kazik1 said above that it worked for him too. So there must be something about the partition size. But I imagine there's more to it than meets the eye.

sounds like faulty sectors on your main partition so maybe the drive is faulty?

  5. Is there an easy way to determine if this is the case? When I analyze the drive it comes out healthy with no bad sectors ...
