  1. was wondering if theres a good small program (I've heard Premier does but too pricey for me) that can identify what the bitrate was used to encode a divx or mpeg file.

The reason I'm asking is because I would like to edit some old stuff I have mpeg and divx, by cutting stuff out and re-encoding. So I figure if I match the bitrate or am close I shouldn't lose too much quality, whereas right now I am probably using a bitrate that is much higher than it was encoded thus wasting space.

If there's another better way please let me know. I use virtual dub for divx sometimes and do a straight raw dump which is fine but it is real bad at skipping frames...

    Thanks.

I don't understand. If you've made these files youself, just dial up the bitrate you want in VIRTUAL DUB otherwise ...read on...

    3 WAYS TO DO IT
    1. Windows Media Player Shows Bitrate on MPEG -1 and 2
for this you need MEDIA PLAYER 6.4 (none higher will do)
Load the file in have it playing and go to file menu>properties>2nd tab read details
HERE in the white window you see 3 to 4 items like: Video Renderer.. Highlight this go properties again..and the frame rate is shown

    2. Download a 30 day shareware viewer called bitrate viewer by TECHOLD

    3. If you have power dvd installed, open the program, in 4.0 or highe , drag the file to the player..and while its playing...do the following..
RIGHT CLICK the screeen and choose show infpormation..a superinmpose character display show the bitrate on the sceen now until you uncheck SHOW INFORMATION again
