    Straight from our Glossary

Intellectual property (IP) that is distributed illegally. Examples are software being given away or resold without the permission of the author, serial numbers or ways to crack software that is sold (serialz or crackz), movies, music, etc.

  3. If you download any thing that you have to pay for you are breaking the law. Take it from people that download MP3 and have to pay the RIAA $3000.00 dollars to go away

  4. Its comes from the word software.
Then lingo for a software became a ware. The plural of ware is wares, and its cool to change a "s" at the end of a word to a z, so it became warez.

    That's highly debatable.

If you're a 12 year old with more respect for rap stars than English. These people end up going far........ to jail!

  9. I always thought it referred to Warez, MX where things are pretty loose and shady.

Of course you got to remember that it also a term older then the big commercial interweb, so it was likely seen as pretty cool all around at the time. I mean this was back when leet still had the e on the front.

Did I ever tell any of you back in the BBS days I was on a "Warez board"?
A friend made a big deal about getting me in... yet all it was is alot of porn and a download of some casio game they ripped from floppys. I laugh at him about that to this day.

it drives me nuts when people pronounce it WARR-EZZ

/weirz/ n. Widely used in cracker subcultures to
denote cracked version of commercial software, that is versions from
which copy-protection has been stripped. Hackers recognize this
term but don't use it themselves.
Laserdiscs are cool, but laserdiscs on DVD-Rs are cooler.

Jaurez... hey ... I know that guy

In my BBS days, the only z's I saw were on words like zoo and zebra. And disgustingly enough, probably descriptions of porn on some freaks server.

I would think it got started from people <black/white/hispanic, etc)butchering the English language, maybe being too lazy to enunciate right, or maybe just too dumb to learn while in school. Im not talking about typos, I'm talking about speaking and just not caring how they sound.
I'll not go any furhter hence I be accused of something.

I thought it was a culture brought about by mobile phones, but that may just be this 'how r u?' shite.

I don't answer such messages or e-mail. I speak American English, thanks.

I have enough of a hard time understanding Brits with their proper English. No offense guys, you just use words I've never heard of.

  19. That's because the Brits slang is way different than American slang. But I do know what you mean.

If it were not for BlackAdder & Monty Python, I'd have no clue what a nappy or a pram was.

If you have a hard time understanding brits then you wouldn't want the job I used to have. We got calls from all over the world, and we knew who in the group had the easiest time understanding others because of accents and slang. I ended up with alot of calls from Scottland and England, I'm not expert at either but I can bound my way though fairly thick accents from each, for no other reason then I always have. But our late night calls from honk kong I always had to transfer.

  23. There's something cool about the letter Z, I'm not sure why. If you look at anime they love the letter Z (DB -> DBZ for example). There's also Gundam Z (actually it's Zeta Gundam but...) and then came Gundam ZZ (Gundam doublt zeta).

It's a fun sound or something, I don't know. Warez was used long before rap/hip-hop become popular thou. I remember seeing it on BBS's from 1990 at least.

    yeah, hip-hop & rap weren't popular before 1990....

I can't remember how many times in high school I was listening to Public Enemy, Run-DMC or Ice-T and was suddenly struck by the thought "boy, it's a shame this music isn't popular!"

I feel I have to defend my honor here. The only reason my login is spelled 'redwudz' is that every other convolution of 'redwoods' was taken in my ISP. As far as the use of slang common with the newer generation, and some of the posters on this website; It just makes me want to load up my DVD of "My Fair Lady".

I was the same way. Now I'm just sick and tired of rap. Its all the same. Just a new form of pop.
    His name was MackemX

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend?

ahhh, there's always some good stuff worth checking out - currently liking what I've heard from the new Outkast, and I'm wearing the plastic off my Jurassic 5 "Strength In Numbers" disc.

It even goes back further than that -
Fatback's King Tim III and the Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight emerged from New York City in 1979, and influnced Punk/New Wave acts to bring it into pop culture, such as Blondie (Rapture) and Adam & The Ants (Ant Rap)... although the movement had been taking shape for almost a decade prior.
