  1. HI,

I'm just about to order LG GSA 4040B, but I'm a little confused about some specifications for this drive and can't seem to find a straight answer.
Perhaps current LG owners could help.

Can this drive read dual layer Hollywood DVD movies?...I saw in some specs stated that it reads single layer DVD movies, but what about dual layer?

If somebody gives me DVD-RAM disk with a recorded movie on it that was recorded on the stand alone Panasonic recorder like DMR-E80H will this burner be able to read it?...somebody mentioned that LG drive can't record movies on DVD-RAM drive, but only data, is this true?

Can LG drive record on dual layer DVD-RAM discs?

Thank you much for your help.

    Yes it can.

From what I've read the e80 writes to DVD-RAM discs a little bit differently. I haven't tried it myself (I have both an LG 4040 and a Panasonic e80).

Can LG drive record on dual layer DVD-RAM discs?
Currently there aren't any drives on the market that can write to any kind of dual layer discs. You may only, hopefully, need just a firmware upgrade, but most likely you'll need to buy a whole new drive.

??If somebody gives me DVD-RAM disk with a recorded movie? ect! ect!.

Why use a DVD RAM, when DVD+RW or DVD-RW are cheaper!.

I tried a movie on DVD RAM, it would only be reconized by the LG drive using
Power DVD in the computer, would not work in my DVD Player. ( DVD+RW do at least in my DVD Player ).

But then why would you use DVD Ram for this purpose?.

Because I have somebody who has Panasonic DMR-E80H.
DMR-E80H only records to DVD-R and DVD-RAM, it doesn't record to RWs.

Would LG drive be able to read dual layer 9.4 GB DVD-RAM disc recorded on Panasonic E80H?...because it's my understanding that Panasonic can record to dual layer DVD-RAM.

I think you are confusing double-sided (2x4.7GB=9.4GB) disc with dual-layer (8.5GB) disc. Currently only double-sided DVD-RAM discs exist, and they require flipping the disc to record on the other side.

Also any DVD drives which are compatible with the DVD-RAM format are able to read the DVD-RAM discs recorded by a stanalone RAM recorder. Just remember that these RAM discs are recorded as the DVD-VR file format with VRO file extension, not the more popular DVD-Video format. Unless your DVD software supports the DVD-VR format, you need to change it to the DVD-Video format in order to view the content. You should find some threads discussing this topic in the DVD Recorders Forum.
