It must be a new item because it's not listed on their website.

or because best buy regularly removes sales items or they "quickly" sell out. you can have the same thing had at amazon.com for a penny cheaper, see my thread on that deal for the link. best buy will also charge you sales tax, if applicable, while amazon will not.

I just bought a 50-pack of DVD-R. They are CMC...but I haven't try any yet. Hopefully, they will work fine with my SONY 500A.

we'll see how it goes - I picked up a spindle of the -R, and right now it's burning a backup of "Grey Gardens" at 4x in my Sony DRU-500AX.

in 7 minutes or so, I'll pop it in the disc player and check quality - it's a single-layer original, done as an ISO with DVD Decrypter.

update - disc worked great, burned at 4x consistently, and I checked the disc - no problems.

I'll have to download one of the id apps and see who the manufacturer is...

Someone has now reported that he bought Memorex 4x DVD+R made by CMC Magnetics so I guess the answer is no.

They burn at 2x on my Sony DRU500ax. Must have burned 200 of them so far with zero failures.

Until this week, I've had good luck with the dozen or so 25 disc spindles
of 4X Memorex dvd+R media that I've bought at CompUSA over the last four or five months. CDVDinfo identifies them as Ricoh, 2.4X/4X capable, etc. My plextor 504 likes them.

But the two Memorex "4X DVD+R"spindles I bought a couple days ago have no identifying info on disc, no certified write speed info, no manufacturer's ID, no media ID .... so all I get is a painfully slow 2.4X burn rate. They're in Memorex 4X+R packages, with the same disc surface decor, and CompUSA charged the Memorex 4X spindle price,
    but they're real clunkers.

i tested these discs and they are manufactered by Ricoh.

the weird thing was that i could not use DVDinfo on a blank disc (i kept on getting errors), i had to burn something to it first be being able to get the media code from it.
(i kinda thought that was wierd)

my burner is a plextor 504a

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1061127425157&skuId=5974895&type=product

if you don't want to order online and there is no bestbuy near you....bring it to staples....they have to match the price because it is not just an internet company...its a real chain of stores.

  16. i think memorex + media has gone very cheaply very quickly, i had the same experience with some memorex + discs that i bought recently. these discs have the RICOH media code, too, although even newer memorex + discs are now apparently CMC discs!

the new bad RICOH discs (cannot speak to the packaging on the CMC discs) are only distinguishable from older spindles i bought in a very bizarrely minimal way: on the bottom of the spindle there is a 5 inside arrows forming a triangle with "PP" written beneath it; on top of the spindle there is the same thing. on the good RICOH discs, the ones i burned over 80 of with no burn failures, all at 4x, and all of which i've checked in dvd utilities have no burn errors, the 5PP on the top is big and the one on the bottom is smaller. on the new bad discs, ones that i burnt 5 coasters with before switching the speed to 2.4x and having no problems, the 5PP on the top is small and the one on the bottom is bigger.

i do not know if the same goes for the 50 pack spindles, if anyone else
has investigated this matter with the same microscopic examination that i have, please post your findings.

you cannot read the code off a blank + media, only - media. with + media you have to burn something on it first.
BTW bought 2-25 paks of memorex 4x +dvdr from amazon weeks ago and they are ricohs

That's a recycling symbol. The 5 and PP tell us that the
spindle's made of the plastic resin called polypropylene.

Can you please tell me how to compare my burned discs with the original files? I'd like to test that as well. FYI, I burned 50 DVD-Rs of the Memorx and no coasters. Burned all at 4X as well. Just picked up another 50 pack today and burned the first 13 with no probs. My DVDs are not larger than 4GB tho' which is where a lot of people reported problems.

harpe025 - I use DirToolKit, which has a binary file comparison utility. Ulead DMF2 leaves the Video_TS directory intact after a burn, so I just compare the contents of that directory with the actual DVD.
