  1. If a DVD won't fit on a standard DVD-R, is it possible to make a working copy of it without the menus or extras, not by ripping and doing work on the video itself, but simply by exluding certain files?

With DVD-SHRINK you can do that exactly as you want. I have a lot of DVDs with only the movie. This way you almost retain the quality, or in a lot of cases, there's no need to re-compress, so the video is exactly as the original.

With the option RE-AUTHOR on DVD-SHRINK, you can put or exclude what you want on the dvd. You can put, foe example, the initial studio animation, a trailer of the movie and the movie. You can level the quality of each segment and also keep or eliminate subtitles/foreign audios. DVD-SHRINK compress & create the correct files to make your disc works perfectly. In this case, when you put the finalized DVD on your player, all files are played in the order you specified on the program. You have access to the audios /Subtitles through your remote control.

Give it a try. This program is a marvel and is free.

You can burn the resultant files with nero, or, i recommend Record Now Max...100% compatible DVDs.
