  1. I just got a Plextor PX-708A DVD burner for my computer. I want to be able to copy video tapes onto disks. What else do I need to get in order to get the video onto my computer so I can convert it and burn it? I was told I need a video card (I don't know what that is) so I can connect my VCR to my computer. Is that all?

A capture card, such as ATI AIW or a capture device, such as a ADVC 100.

What is on video tape is Analog (a whole bunch of individual frames or pictures strung in a row) and you need to get that analog video captured digitally in order to twiddle it inside your PC. That needs a capture (video) card that digitizes the video while it captures onto a harddrive connected to your PC. By the way, this hobby(?) eats money, harddrive space, time and patience. Be forewarned. It is darned fun though.

In addition to the capture card, you will need some software to perform the capture (usually comes with the capture card but you do get what you pay for so a 30.00 solution will get you 30.00 worth of video.) You may also need some editing software and some burning (either DVD (expensive) or CD/VCD (less quality but less expensive also))) hardware and software if you want it on CD/DVD.

You should have a fast processor, lots of RAM and even more, Fast harddrive space.

I have a "little" system running my Home Theater that has a P4 2.4 ghz and 512 of RAM and 2-80 gb 7200 RPM harddrives with an ATI AllInWonder (8500) video card to perform all the do dahs and bing bongs.

Although you could get by with less than that, this is in my view a middle range solution. Less would increase the frustration and tax the "fun" part.

The All in Wonder has all the capture software you will need bu little in editing software, unless you spring for the state of the art from ATI whoch is big bucks and the edit software ain't that great.

VirtualDub and TMPGEnc are almost "must have" for this. And afforfable.
