  1. I know this might sound like a silly question but I have an apex 1600 dvd player and I just bought an onkyo surround sound home theater system. Basically I ran a Dolby Digital 5.1 test and it ditn work right for the 5.1 test. Anyways Im just getting into all of this stuff I have a S- video cable running to my home theater system and a stereo rca jack the white and red one. Am I supposed to be running something else to get surround sound 5.1?

  2. dolby digital 5.1 will require you to use either optical or coax out if your dvd player supports it.

Just checked, you will need a coax cable for your audio to run 5.1

The red and white cables are for stereo sound, but i don't think your going to need them if you have the coax cable. I may be mistaken.
Hunting, sure i'll go hunting. When is cow season?

To play any type of digital signal from your DVD player (includes dolby digital and DTS) you need to use digital cables. Most DVD players allow you to choose between COAX digital or Digital Optical. The RCA cables you are using are analogue and can output stereo and dolby pro-logic.
When you do hook up using a digital cable....don't forget to change the settings of the DVD player to output digital. You may have to fiddle with your a/v receiver as well.

    Hope this helps and goodluck
