Hi Guys and Gals,
I am trying to backup my copy of Scarface (25th anniv) and there is not one program I can use to rip the VOBs. I tried DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink v2.3 and v3.0 Beta, Smart Ripper, DVDXCopy Xpress and Vstrip.
I have never had a problem using DVD Shrink in the past, this is the 1st time I've had to try alternative routes.
The problem is, part way through the rip, the program (whichever one I tried) locks my whole PC up. I even tried playing the movie with PowerDVD, hitting pause, then trying to decrypt. No dice. I also tried it in both my DVD-r and DVD drives with no difference.
Are there unrippable DVD's? Any thoughts or ideas would be great.
BTW, it's not my H/W or the s/w b/c I tested a few other DVD's after this and they ripped just fine. I have ample Disk space, memory and processing power.
Thanks!

Not sure, but I know a friend who made a backup of Scarface, I think it's the same one you have and his works, and almost certain he used DVD X Copy. I bet there is someone who has made a backup that can help you out. As far as I know there are none that you can't backup at the moment... Anyone know?

Clean the disk well with window cleaner. Try ripping with your DVD-R drive. It will be slow, but this has often rescued disks for me.

The disc has a few minor scratches on it, nothing of note. I did clean it very well halfway through this process and it didn't help.
The weird thing is I know for a fact it is this particular DVD, not anything to do with hardware or software.
I guess I just am unlucky if other people have been able to rip Scarface. -
Hi there!
It sounds like a damaged disk (you mentioned there are some scratches on it).
Maybe if you ripped with DVD Decrypter in ISO mode you would be more succesful?(that is if you havent done that already).
Good Luck

Great point Leo... I've also had good luck using DVD Decrypter when all others fail, it seems to read damaged disc slightly better. After that you'll have to use DVD Shrink to transcode it down to fit onto one disc, because if I'm not mistaken those disc have extra footage on them. I've been reading about a program called DVD X Rescue that is suppose to make backups of badly scratched disc, but I'm not sure it works, just figured you might want to check it out if DVD Decrypter doesn't help.

I'll try DVD Decrypter in ISO mode and see how that works. Thanks guys.
