Hi,
maybe a stupid question, but can I play 8 cm DVDs on my DVD Player or does my Player need this special feature?
I have a Toshiba SD 220E and I want to buy an DVD-Videocamera. The DVD-Videocameras are recording on 8cm DVDs (is it actually the miniDVD???). I don't know, if my DVD Player will be able to play these (smaller) DVDs.
Any explanation welcome,
cumi

If it's got a recess in the loading tray, play away.
Don't even consider 8cm discs with slot loaders unless you enjoy taking stuff apart. -
MiniDVD refers to DVD content on a CD disc....Although i guess people will call 8cm discs miniDVDs.
Ive made a few and they played fine, like the last person said...dont try em in slot loaders !! -
The original poster specifically mentioned 8cm discs from a camcorder, and I have seen manufacturers calling them MiniDVD. They should know. Should being the operative word !
Generally a CD encoded with DVD content is referred to as a cDVD where I work, the C standing for something rude because the damn things are notoriously incompatible on the whole. -
The camcorder I am talking about is the SONY DVD100. I think it is recording on 8 cm DVD, it shouldn't be a DVD content on a CD.
You can also find it at amazon.com
Actually I want to be sure, that if I buy this camcorder, I will be able to play it back on my "stupid" DVD Player without any conversation, copying or involving a PC, etc...
At my local store, they say it should work like that simple... -
Gary.
Well the phrase 'miniDVD' refering to DVD content on a CD was around long before 8cm DVD-R, and in fact before DVD-R. But of course it was unofficial so if Sony or whoever want to use it, im sure they are free to, never seen the termcDVD used hardly at all. God knows who thought of that one -

fyi - most of the DVD recorders will require you to finalize the DVD before you play it in a standalone unit. Once it is finalized, you lose any unused space.
Of course, since the high quality mode only holds about 30 minutes, you can't get a whole lot onto one anyways. And the media is expensive.
I thought when they first came out you would be able to use standard DVDs and record 2 hours of DVD video (or at least an hour!), but the mini's only hold 30 minutes. The cheapest I have seen them is around $6. Since there is not a huge installed base price has not really been dropping. If the media got down to about $3, I think this would be cool.

Anyway, you have to turn the 2 sided disk to record the second 30 min. I think it's doesn't matter to turn or insert another 1.4GB disk.
