Problem copying to dvd+r

I have a TDK burner and I use dvd shink to compress the dvd and then use Nero Express to burn it. Here is my problem, I am able to burn the files to a dvd rw but am unable to burn it direct to a dvd+r. I am still able to backup dvd's but only if I copy the dvd rw to a dvd+r. I would like to shorten the process and backup directly to a dvd+r. Can any one help, or at least recomend a program to use vise Nero Express.
