I've recently purchased a Pacific 1002w DVD player from Asda on the knowledge that it will play most of my mpeg files that i have on CD. All those that are in the SVCD format work fine, and the player is capable of reading MP3s written to CD. However, unlike my friend's 1002 player, it cannot play straight mpeg files.
I've entered the multi region code and the macro code that i found by searching this forum to see if that would help, but it still doesn't work. Does anyone know what is the problem?

yep.they changed the firmware.
theres nothing you can do,apart form look at the sets of stars on the box.
2 sets of review stars, and it played mostly all,3 sets and its newer, and most likely changed a bit.
they also disabled some things like certain parts of the zoom function, and the ability to play(on some models) dvd+R.
it still makes a weird sound when you play some cds/dvds.
some do and some dont, but they know about it,but must be getting made a lot cheaper if they use that noisy drive.
its an ok player for the money, but a tiny bit cheap looking.
the best drive ive seen lately,is the ALBA DVD55,available from toysrus,in the UK,and its £39.99.
good quality, plays everything ive thrown at it,and its cheap too. -
