Conversion DVD to mpeg or AVI format (please help)

Hello all,
I have been editing alot of mpegs and avi's using windows media maker, then converting using TMPGENC then burning to vcd with nero. (Home Movies).
My question is:
I have 2 children and some dvd's I own our yes supposed to be childrens movies(but some language and suggestive material I feel is not suitable).
So I did some research for software(I am willing to pay for) that will allow me to convert my dvd movies into a format like mpeg or avi, so I can import them to movie maker and edit swear words and things children should not be aware of...then save it as a wma use tmpgenc to convert it to ntcs format then use nero to burn to svcd or vcd....so the question is--------
Any software takes dvd format to mpeg or avi that is simple to use(again I am will to pay for it).....Any suggestions welcome thanks!!!

Well, since you're already familiar w/ tmpgenc, why dont you just mess around w/ the encoded file? That results in a mpg...

With tmpgenc you import to convert to mpeg(to the vcd or svcd format you want correct??...my prob is getting dvd to mpeg all in one shot....then i can import to movie maker ...edit out what i need too...them make the movie with movie maker...convert with tmpgenc(to ntcs) ...then burn it to cd with nero...(which will give me a edited vcd...
Thanks for responding though....If I am going the wrong way about trying to do this...Please explain any resolution to my problem...Appreciate it much....write now im trying to use magic dvd as I write this(takes dvd to vcd,svcd or avi format) which works great for me in avi cause i can import to movie maker and edit..
