  1. Hi all;

As the subject says, I've been having trouble trying to grab dv from a Sony camcorder (DCR-TRV11). I searched through the forum but couldn't find any sort of solution to this:

Every time I try to capture (using my computer's Firewire port), either the preview pane freezes (and the capture terminates prematurely), or little glitches are introduced into the AVI. These glitches are not present on the source tape when I watch it on the camera.

This happens consistently, usually within a minute or two, every single time I try to capture from this camera.

By contrast, I've been able to capture ~20 minute segments from a VCR using a Canopus ADVC-100 with zero glitches.

I've also plugged the analog output from the camera into the Canopus and captured successfully.

I've tried capturing to AVI using Scenalyzer, as well as capturing to MPEG using the software that came with my DVD burner (Intervideo WinDVD Creator) and gotten the glitches each time.

I have an ASUS P4C800 Deluxe motherboard with the firewire built in.

It looks to me like the problem is with the DV out on the camera (the analog out seems to work fine), but my friend (who owns the camera) says he's used the DV out to dump to another computer in the past without any problems.

Any suggestions? Thanks a million if you can help me sort this out.

I had a similar problem with my previous system.
I was getting small coloured blocks on individual frames after transferring footage via firewire.
It turned out to be a problem with the PCI bus on my motherboard.
I found a latency patch which cured the problem.
The board I had at the time was a Jetway/VIA which are notorious for these kind of problems.
Having said that, the board I now have is a newer version from the same company and it's been fine.

  3. I've had the same problem.

It's no use ringing Sony Customer Services ... they ended up asking me what I think I should do!

It looks like it's a firewire connection or driver problem.

If and when I work out a solution for this I'll post back.

  4. Hi, I am having weird problems too on my P4C800-E DELUXE, I am capturing DV off a SONY DCR-TVR9 and I am getting ALOT of noise on the resulting AVI. I've used Premier Pro, Pinnacle 8, and even MS Movie Maker to make the AVI. All programs produce similar noise. So I'm guessing it is hardware.

I assume it is "pink" noise, because it's a high pitched noise and it also messes with the video, either accelerating or slowing and when the pink noise is gone, the sound is choppy.

I know the camera is working fine because viewing the tape from the camera is fine. I also used the analog out to send it to VHS and that was fine too.

I could have sworn it was working fine. The only recent change I made was add a Hauppague WinTV-PVR-250. I will remove it and test again.

The second test I will do is disable my on-board sound and put in a Soundblaster Live! card that I have laying around.

    I'll keep you posted.

It doesn't help you but I did some testing with my Sony MiniDV, ADVC-100 and my firewire card and couldn't tell the difference between using the following two methods:

    1) MiniDV > Firewire > PC

    2) MiniDV > ADVC-100 via composite > PC

I don't have the issues you speak of but I was testing the quality of the ADVC-100; I wasn't disapointed.
I suppose all I'm saying is until you solve it maybe in the short term the ADVC-100 is the way to go.

  6. It's the camera . I borrowed a friends camera and tested it out on my system and everything worked smotthly.

I am sending it in for repairs. They better fix it!
