I have the sony dru500ax and have had my fair share of trouble with incompatible media.
some write at 2x when it should be 4x some dont do a good burn etc
please dont reply to any of the above as i have been through it all (firmware etc etc)
what i want is for anyone who owns a sony to state which media they use that works and writes at the stated speed
and i will take an average of what is said..
thankyou in advance

I now only use Memorex and TDK 4x DVD+R and have burned 50 out of 50 of each at 4X (under 15 minutes for a full DVD.) I only buy them when there are on special at Amazon or Target usually.
You get 25 of the Memorex 4X DVD+R for $29.99 and free shipping from Amazon.

Use any of the RICOHJPNR01 discs ( TDK , Verbatim , Memorex 4X +R ) . They always work as advertised . You can usually find them on sale for about 1.20 U.S. at some brick and mortar store every week .
Keep it on the big cam ! -
What DVD player are you trying to play them back on ?
Burning the disc is only half the story - some players are just as fussy with media as the recorders are, and everyone is so obsessed with speeds these days they don't consider the other compatibility problems which can be just as severe.
Oddly enough, the cheapest DVD players made in China by companies you've never heard of seem to play recordable media better than some of the big name companies, probably because these adhere to the specs better and have a tighter tolerance in the optics.
If you've got a player that's as picky as my Sony, you'll know all about this problem. Quite frankly you'll be happy with a 1x write if the damn thing works afterwards !! -
I had two DRU's got rid of them. They always had problem's burning some media. I have a Pioneer AO4 no problem's
There a website that tell's you what media will work in the DRU. If you look in my past posting you might find or do a search on google. -
Using TDK 4X (both +R and -R). More than 200 disks and no problems. Although, +R disks are not compatible with many DVD-ROMs around.
You can also try
HP +R 2X disks. Will record at 2x and verify ok. Tested 20
Media not to use:
Princo. Threw them away. Tried 4
Optowrite -R 2X. 3 out of 20 failed to record. But are cheap.
Sentinel 4X +R disks. Burnt only at 2.4X
Sentinel 4X -R disks. Burnt only at 2X.
(Sentinel are cheaper than TDK but you must expect 1 out of 5 to fail during recording and 1 out of 10 to fail during verify).
Verbatim 2.4X +R disks. Failed misserablyThe more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
Verbatim dvd-r 2x @ 2x (29 out of 30)
Sony dvd+rw 2.4x @ 2.4x
Memorex dvd+rw 2.4x @ 2.4x -
also look at the dvd writer link on the main page on the left, it has tons of opinions. If you ask a media store what to use they are more than happy to let you know what works with the right firmware.

2.0f firmware
I use Verbatim 2.4 and 4X and both burn at the appropriate speed. I have also had success with Fugi and Ritek at 2.4 but with the current Verbatim prices I see no reason to buy anything else.
My backups play fine on my Pioneer, Yamaha, RCA, and GE machines. -
Verbatim 2x @ 2x
TDK 2x @ 2x
Ritek 4x @ 4x
All were DVD-R.

@ garryheather its the writer (sony dru500ax) thats the problem but as i have tried everything im not going into it again as i have gone over and over everything.
it just is not as media compatible as the pioneers.
anyway i have 3 standalone dvd players a ps2 and a computer to try discs on (yes and i know one player will play where one might not but if i burn4x ritek and they only burn at 2x this has nothing to do with the players
sony should get there act together no wonder they are in such a mess just now
as for support waste of time spent about 3 hours on phone and got nowhere.
my burner even failed there online test and they said its because i have other burning software installed.
it never said on the box uninstall half your programmes before use
thats the end of my short rant but i understand exactly what garryheather is saying as i have seen many people blame the writer when it was the burning procedure or standalone that was to blame
but in this case its SONY SONY SONY all the way -
memorex
tdk
verbatim
these 3 seem to be coming up in all the posts i will try them and see how i get on
The ones i have most trouble with are the ritek 4x they always burn at 2x
Also the datawrite yellow does this but the backups work ok
but because they are 4x and they only burn at 2x i think they cant be compatible enough therefore i think the burn wont be as good even if it does play
im i correct in thinking this -
mirror platinum 4x (an30 or an31 media codes) work great in my sony dru 500a all burn flawlessly at 4x
dont use the 2x mirrors though .... they are different media codes made by a different company and the sony dont like them -
DRU500A w/ FW 2.0f
Ritek 4x @ 4x
TDK 2x @ 2x
Ritek 1x @ 1x
Imation 1x @ 1x
Accu wouldn't burn... all coasters -
Optodisc Gold. On my 4th cake of 50 and NOT ONE media caused coaster. They were from 3 different production runs. I have a DRU-500a

Sony DRU500a f/w 10f ( set sec.slave )
tdk -r 4x burn @ 4x used about 120 with 100% success rate -
I have the OEM version of the DRU510A (that's DWU14A) - and just got a pack of RITEK G04's. I haven't had much success getting them to burn at 4x. After making a few coasters, I dialed the speed down to 2x and they burn fine now. I'm using DVDShrink and Copy2DVD (w/ firmware 1.0d). I'm hesitant to update my firmware (read some warning posts by others) unless I need to. Anyone shed any light?
BTW:
XP Pro SP1 (Raid 5)
Asus A7M266D
2-Athlon MP1900
1 Gb DDR
ATI 8500 DV

Sony DRU500a f/w 1.0d- Ritek G04 DVD-R burn @ 4X (Leadin/out @ 2X track burns @ 4X with Nero 5xx) Full DVD burn in ~ 15 min.
Sony DRU500a f/w 2.0f- Ritek G04 DVD-R burn @ 2X Full DVD burn ~ 28 min.
No coasters either FW with G04's.
Bad luck with the Matrix 4X freebe sample pack from Shop4tech. -
TDK & Samsung.
Had bad experience with Verbatim.
All of them DVD-R
I am at 2.0g firmware. -
