  2. I think it's for some DVD feature not yet implemented into players. My experience has been you can leave it out and most players will not have a problem. Myself I usually include it in all my backups.

    DVD-AUDIO.
I do as Bob W and add the folder for compliance.

The AUDIO_TS folder is for complying with the DVD Specifications. Many of the features of DVD audio portion of the spec will be implemented in this directory.

folder required to hold contents of DVD-Audio (not Video) discs. sometimes required for proper playback of dvdr (video) on settops.
DVD-Audio discs have fallen out of favor since the advent of SACDs.

On the commercially released "Silver Bullet" DVD there is no AUDIO_TS folder. Just a useless fact I thought I'd share.
Laserdiscs are cool, but laserdiscs on DVD-Rs are cooler.

I have run across many DVD's that don't have the folder.

Old technology? More like "technology-yet-to-be-implemented" on a wide scale basis.

There definitely are commercial DVDs that don't have this directory. However, these discs are NOT compliant with the DVD specification.
