  1. Giga Rec is a feature available in Plextor CD Premium Writers that allowed to burn 1 Gb in a 80 min CD...

Does anyone knows if this feature is also available with the Plextor DVD 708 writer?

Also, it is possible to read a "Giga Rec CD" in a conventional DVD player?

  2. Giga rec is not available on 708 but Power rec and Vari rec are available.
and recorded Giga rec CD can only read Plextor Witers.

  3. The same goes for Sony's DDCD variant, only that needs dedicated or suitably certified media. The same cross compatibility issue applies when reading back.

  5. The problem is the density of the data which causes problems.

The track pitch for the pre-groove is the same as a normal disc on the Giga-rec system as it uses conventional discs, and just as some Yamaha and Plextor drives make the data less densly packed for auido CD's to improve the jitter, these methods of writing data squash it in even tighter than normal.

Some readers will not have too many problems with this, but others won't be able to reclock correctly and reject the disc.

Plextor make sure their drives will read the resulting discs, but no-one else is under any obligation to follow suit as these discs bastardise the CD standards and are not garaunteed to be compatible.
