Hi there,
I am trying to rip the Vertical Limit DVD and I use he Smart Ripper for it.
However, when in movie mode the programme always gives the following error :
"Can't read block 424383 (byteposition 848.766 KB
Unlock again NOW and retry
ABORT RETRY IGNORE"
What is going on ? How can I solve it ?
I have chosen "unlock drive from the Smart Ripper settings.
Please help cause I gotta give the DVD back to the person who gave it to me !!!
Thank you very much.

Try open the DVD with a DVD player (PowerDVD) first ,
donīt play the movie however.
So start SmartRiper and rip the movie !
Not 100% guaranteed ,but always works for me. -
I open the movie with Power DVD and pause it and then run Smart Ripper but the error is still there.
The error always occurs in a specific part of each vob.
It's my first DVD rip and I'm very dissapointed.
Also, when I run DVD Decrypter, when it reaches to the point that Smart ripper gave me the error, Decrypter says (can't read from the specified device" and crashes.
Please help guys.
P.S. : I have updated the DVD-ROM firmware to make it region-free. -
Is it possible that it's a hardware problem or a copy protection of the DVD ?
DVD Decrypter gives me "Uncorrectable errors" and when I enable the ignore error options, then the movie is ripped but with 3462 read erorrs.
For example, in vob_3 the ripping starts smoothly, then gives errors for a long time - during which DVD read spead falls to 4 KB/s !!!- and then continues to rip normally till ther end of the vob.
Same goes for vob_4.
I'll try to encode to SVCD with those "corrupted" vobs and I'll let you know, however the AC3-to-WAV decoding (just finished) gave a WAV file of 76 minutes' duration, out of a 120 min movie.
Let me know if you think it's a hardware problem please !!!
Thx in advance. -
Well, it wasn't obvious to the eye that it was scratched. I mean there was no deep scratch noticable, however I wasn't left with anything else to believe apart from the fact that the disk was defective.
It was borrowed from a video-club, so perhaps being scratched wouldn't be that difficult, since dozens of people have borrowed it.
I'll rent another tomorrow and I'll see how it goes.
I'll keep you posted.
Take care. -

I've succesfully ripped Vertical Limit with SmartRipper several months ago, so I know SmartRipper can do it - The
error you get will show up no matter what ripping program you use - I've had it on other movies I've rented. When you watch it - you just see a small glitch, but it is kind of annoying that the rippers "die" when they have this kind of problem. -
Whenever I run into difficulties with DVDs and Smartripper, I just tell it to search for the key at every new VOB file ... I think the key sequence (or whatever) changes in the newer DVDs (different key for every vob, or something like that).

Well, it must have been a scratch or something.
I just finished ripping The Bone Collector without a problem -I hope the conversion will go as well as ripping-
Well, another QUESTION :
How can I see the *EXACT* playtime of the movie (without the extra futures, for example behind the scenes e.t.c.) so as to calculate the bitrate when encoding ?
Thx in advance. -
YOu don't say how you normally process the rip once you're done. I use DVD2AVI. You can then use VFAPI to give you a "phony" avi file for the *.d2v file - and from the avi file you can easily get the length of the movie.
I'm sure there are other ways as well, but this is easy if you use DVD2AVI.
