  1. Hey All,

I have a question as it relates to backing up my new 8 Crazy Nights DVD. I looked for a post to this similar topic but was unsuccessful. I would like to back up disc one but not include the fullscreen version of the film. Im a widescreen fan and the quality would improve too if i didnt have both huge versions to compress.

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the fullscreen version while keeping the menus, chapters, everything else in tact? Kind of like EVerything is identical except when i go to choose fullscreen nothing happens?

If this doesnt make sense hit me back...But hit me back and help me out if ya can! Thanks alot!

  2. @ cgeistler..I gotta admit...your question is more advanced then any newbie question i've seen as of late. I've just recently started experiencing with other options myself after a long time. But to answer your question you can do this. First...if you don't have these mentioned tools..."IFOEDIT" AND "MENUEDIT"...go to the tools section of the forum at D/L them.

    When you have them...

Rip ALL FILES to your HD..."EXCEPT" the FULL SCREEN VOBS. Then open IFOEDIT and select any .IFO file..and hit "GET VTS SECTORS." Just keep hitting ok through all of them and you'll be fine. Click SAVE in IFOEDIT.

Now after this is done...right click on the total file size by right clicking on the folder you ripped all the files in and selecting properties. If the total file size is 4.37 GB's or less.... you can go straight to the next step which is to open MENUEDIT.....open the VOB file which is usually the "VTS_01_0" file...although it could be in another VOB.

oH..ACTUALLY...Before you open MENUEDIT THOUGH...view the MENU VOB with DVD2AVI..if you don't have it D/L it also. Go frame by frame until you see the outlay of the main menu where you select which version of the movie you want.

Make sure you know where ALL BUTTONS ARE AND COUNT THEM. A button is a function such as "MAIN MENU" or "FULL SCREEN." ...Also remember which side the FULL SCREEN AND WIDE SCREEN BUTTONS ARE ON.

Then open up MENUEDIT..select the MENU VOB AGAIN....and go through each VOB ID..until you see the same number of buttons and the same outlay structure as what you viewed in DVD2AVI.

The free version of menuedit won't show you what button is what..but the structure will be there. So once you get the cell id's where the FULL/WIDE SCREEN options are....simply select "REMOVE FROM MENU"...and hit ok..then save.

Once you do that..your VOB file will be saved with that FULL SCREEN BUTTON DISABLED...it will be there within the menu..you just won't be able to select it.

NEXT. ..create a NEW FOLDER CALLED "VOBS"... Then fire up IFOEDIT....select the "MENU EXTRAS" option....select the "VOBS" folder for the output.....hit OK...then select ALL VOB ID's. STRIP THE VOB.....when you are done..you'll have a newly created .IFO, .BUP AND .VOB FILE. Delete the original VOB, .BUP, AND .IFO files which correspond to the main movie rip...then just transfer the ones from the 'VOB' folder into your RIPPED folder.

Once you get here...you're almost done...what you need to do now is take "dummy vobs"...what I usually do is take a dummy vob off the movie disk itself. Almost always there is at least one....if you see a VOB on your disk in size of 8-32 kb's....just rip it and open it with POWERDVD...it should just be a blank VOB. There should be at least one dummy VOB on the disk. Then what you have to do is make the same number of copies for the dummy vob as would be in the "FULL VERSION."

For example..if there is 4 VTS VOBS for the FULL SCREEN VERSION...say...VTS_04_1, VTS_04_2, VTS_04_3, and VTS_04_4...just copy the dummy vobs FOUR TIMES..and name them EXACTLY as how the original FULL SCREEN VOBS ARE NAMED. Then open up IFOEDIT AND GET VTS SECTORS AGAIN.

Once this is done....you are READY TO BURN. If you follow the steps here....you will accomplish what you want. If you have any questions....lemme know.

By the way..one thing I didn't mention is that...IF..the total file size for that movie is MORE THEN 4.37 GB's (WHICH I SERIOUSLY DOUBT" for that movie....but if it is..then you'll also have to strip audio and or subtitle streams. But as I said..I doubt it will be...if it is..let me know.

    Good Luck. :P

I was also told of another way which actually worked for me on Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Open DVDDecryptor in file mode and have it pick only the main movie files. Let it rip a portion of those and then hit cancel. Open those files with WindowsMedia Player and observe if it is the widescreen or fullscreen files.

If it is the fullscreen files, re-open DVDDecryptor and manually pick all files except those - the ones that DVDDecryptor picked in the first pass.

Once all those files have been ripped, you should have a full working menu, extras and the widescreen version only. You will still have a button for the fullscreen, but nothing will happen when you click on that button.

It sounds crazy, but it did work on Greek Wedding. By removing the fullscreen, no compression was needed as the files were under 4.36 gigs.

  4. CloneDVD in combination with AnyDVD will let you pick and choose which portions to back-up. Use the "Clone DVD" option and it will let you choose which parts to back-up to a single dvd-/+r, while maintaining the menus. It is by far the easiest way to accomplish what you want to do.

  5. Even cheaper, use DVD Shrink. It's freeware and will rip tye DVD, allow selection of what you want to keep or remove, and then generate all the files for burning to a blank DVD. Personally I think it's the next best thing to sliced bread.

They certainly have on every DVD backup I've ever done. You can select what extras to retain, for instance you could remove foreign language soundtracks. However, beware there is one bug, if the primary sound track isn't the language you want, it won't move the 2nd soundtrack into the position of the primary.
