  1. I've been looking at this program for a while but with its capabilities is very difficult to learn immediately. Can anyone recommend a book maybe or a detailed online tutorial on using it? This would be a tremendous help. Thanks!

Vegas 4.0 manual is available at sonicfoundry.com

there's also a guide from the website of a magazine that I found handy when learning. Will try to find again.

I haven't crawled through all the links that BJ_M dropped in that other thread, but you should definitely check out the Creative Cow Vegas forum, and the Tutorials linked from there.

Also the Sundance Media Group knowledge base / forum has some good resources - lots of .veg files as examples, plus a bunch of tutorials.

and definitely check the manual - the index is not the best, but if you page through it, it's pretty well written and has some decent examples.

if you have specific questions, post 'em, I'll try to answer or I'm sure BJ_M can help...

  4. Feeling stupid here....

(in Vegas) how can I see a more detailed timeline, like how with Studio you click and drag to extend it (the timeline) to see it in your determined increments?

    If you understand, then thankS

Arrow key up and down zooms the timeline in and out (or vice versa). Look in the help file, there's a page of keyboard shortcuts, you will need to learn them for navigation.

    another way -

the slider at the bottom of the timeline, where you would grab it and slide it back and forth to see different parts of your timeline?

grab an edge on it and expand it to zoom out of your timeline, or compress it to zoom in to your timeline.

hope this makes sense, if it doesn't let me know and I'll grab a screenshot of what I'm talking about...

Zoom in/out horizontally in small increments (if timeline has focus)
    Up/Down Arrow

Zoom in/out horizontally in large increments or zoom to selection (if one exists)
    Ctrl+Up/Down Arrow

Zoom in time until each video thumbnail represents one frame
    Alt + Up Arrow

though i do it the way house pig describes most of the time--
