Do you have the latest drivers? Go to the manufacturer's website or www.windowsupdate.com and try to find the right driver. Did it USED to work, and now it stopped, or it never worked?

Hmm, I'd try it again. Whenever I open up Windows Explorer it shows my 4040 as a DVD-RAM drive not a CD-ROM drive like yours.

???it shows my 4040 as a DVD-RAM drive??
The same as mine, but mine works like dream, excellent burner!.
?Why are you running two operating systems?, I run windows XP
with no updates and dont have problems. -
This sometimes happens with XP..bit of an annoyance. The only temporary workaround I have found is the following.....
with the disc in the drive, right click on your "My Computer" and choose properties, go to the hardware tab, device manager..
then disable the drive, confirm the dialog telling you it wont work if you do this, once the device manager has refreshed enable the device.
After the device manager has refreshed again you should be able to access the contents of the drive, assuming you left the disc in while doing this.
If this has worked for you and you want a permanent solution, try reinstalling windows to iron out those nasty bugs from conflicting drivers and software. -
If I recall correctly, an ordinary DVD uses the UDF filesystem. Is it possible that your computer has a goofed-up UDF-reading program? Such a program might look at the DVD and reject it as unreadable, never giving the native WinXP UDF reader a chance.
